As all of you know, after 1 1/2 years, I have severe and chronic constipation. I also have severe osteoporosis (dang that anorexia). So, I the doctors insist I take calcium.
Calcium is very constipating and hurts like heck! Osteoporosis doesn't sound too fun either. So, do I suffer worse now or pay the consequences later?
Is there any way to take calcium and not get more constipated? (Yes, I take it with Magnesium....still the C). Anyone that can help? How do I choose between my mental health (C drives me insane) and my physical health (broken bones, hump back, and bone pain?????
What would you do? What has been recommended to you who may be in the same situation????
I was also prescibed a medication for osteoporosis, but the pharmacist said it it worthless if I don't take calcium as it needs calcium to work. Is this right?
I'm desparate, people...as usual.

Sorry to hear you're having all this trouble!
The pharmacist is not entirely wrong in saying the medication will only work if you take calcium. I'm not sure what type exactly it is, but most medications will regulate the absorption of calcium, and so if you aren't getting any, it can't do a whole lot.
I'm not C so I really don't know what advice to give about how to take the calcium. Have you tried taking less, and gotten comfortable at a smaller amount? Vitamin D would help a lot as well, just gotta search around for the Vitamin D - only supplements (I can't find them anywhere).
The only other treatments are hormone therapy, and exercise (both light weight-lifting and aerobic help).
Hopefully someone else on here can be a bit more help. Goodluck, Kat

A list of high calcium foods. Of course you already know I didn't print it for the dairy contents, but it has good non dairy sources listed as well. Hugs, sweetie! Send me an e-mail sometime! I will e-mail you soon! web page

Or suggestions on what type of calcium might be more tolerable. I can't afford the liquid.

Hi Beth, Nice to see you back up and posting . I'm sure there are others with osteo, but they may not have IBS. I don't think it's like IBS and fibro. Have you tried this stuff called,"Caltrate"? I don't know that much about it, but I've seen it advertized on TV quite a bit. -Bob

Have you tried taking calcium citrate or calcium phosphate instead of calcium carbonate? You might already have this info, but maybe this link will help:: http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=6850&page=2 . It answers common questions about taking calcium for osteoporosis.
How much calcium are you supposed to be taking with your osteoporosis medication? Maybe it would be easier if you split up the dose throughout the day.

I wish I could answer this...but I don't know! I don't know much about osteoporosis and I know that right now you're already suffering quite a bit. I'm sorry, Beth.
