I don't take an SFS. They make me gassy & bloated. They increase my D. They also give me stringy orange bm's for some strange reason. It's very much akin to pumpkin innards if I take an SFS.

I'm more or less stable, with a little Immodium assistance & safe food prep. guidelines. I eat tons of SF and IF, most of the time. I play it by ear & listen to my body's cues, too. I eat as organically as possible which decreases attacks. I'm a very sensitive individual, food-wise. I food process most foods. I take digestive enzymes, liquid vitamin/mineral supplements. I use Beano with notoriously gassy foods if I'm in the mood to eat them. I don't add fats which eliminates many attacks. Lately, safely prepared plant fiber feels good (I really follow Heather's guidelines re: IBS-safe food prep. and cannot believe that I'm eating Beans without a "toot" or a whisper. I should be spontaneously combusting, but I can seriously fit into my size 4 jeans after having eaten over 50g of assorted fibers from food, today!)

I'm not good with plant gum products. Psyllium actually painfully constipated me. Inulin gave me cramping & bloating--and a D-type of spasmodic response. So...I keep it pretty grass-roots & earthy & simple--mostly diet, attitude/lifestyle changes, intuitive eating, applying Heather's advice, Immodium as required, fennel/mint teas, etc. Food combining also makes a difference in my IBS. Eliminating gluten eliminated a lot of problems. IBS is one of those funny things--you never know when it's going to change on you. My IBS, when I was a young teen, was completely different. After menopause, things really switched.

Kate, IBS-D.

Yes, I'm stable.
Yes, I feel less gassy and bloated with it.
And YOU BET I'm still able to "go." Only now it's not URGENT and at the most inopportune times. Now I have a life -- finally. Thank God!

It seems like the D's can do okay without it (and Casey whose an A, but special ), but are there any C's or A's that are stable who do not take it? How do you keep things moving?

I've always been a D, though lately veering slightly towards A, not sure why the change - happened since following heathers diet. (All in all it's an improvement to be honest, if I could just get rid of the pain I might start to be able to move forward).

Anyway, I was literally about to push the button on ordering the acacia when I saw this thread. Now very unsure! I have a big event in a couple of weeks, and as my symptoms have been so bad, I was thinking introducing SFSs in the run up?

Is this not a good idea? I thought SFS were good for both D and C?

Help!!

SF's are absolutely great for D's! Many D's use the SF to at least get stable. Just make sure to start at a low dose and work up slowly as Heather recommends.

Order some! I did and have used it for the past 2 months, it helped so much.

...of citrucel before my 3 meals. I previously had gotten up to 12 grams of Acacia a day...divided between the 3 meals, but I was real gassy/bloated.

My doctor told me that SFS can be very problematic for IBS folks...so he told me to stop and put me on Miralax.

I still fear eating food without any SF beforehand,,,so I'm keeping that one or 2 grams just for luck?

I don't know...I'm not happy on one or off one.

I think, Beth, you forget that I eat alot of SF plant foods. While I do not consume foods traditionally thought of as SF--grains/starches, I sure eat quite a few KILOGRAMS of SF vegetables every week. Also, many foods contain both kinds of fiber. SF does not necessarily equal "starchy carbohydrate."
Too many individuals only consider the SF in grains/starches, when in reality there is actually MORE SF in non-starchy plant foods. So, my gut is pretty well cushioned most days. Moreover, for optimal health/functioning the individual needs both SF and IF. With IBS, caution/care needs to be applied with IF.

Incidentally, many SFS are bean/legume gum derived or different cellulose compounds. Acacia is a gum. Benefiber is guargum. I believe that "Citrucelle" is methylcellulose.

I do SF with/in concurrence with IF. (Incidentally, this week, I've eaten 5 lbs. or so of zucchini and at least 3lbs. of assorted mushrooms (I've got another 5lbs. of portabellas in my fridge that I haven't arrived at eating and maybe about another 2 lbs. of zucchini), about 2 lbs. of carrots, a large spaghetti squash. Lol, I still haven't even touched my gorgeous golden beets & I have another spagetti squash in the cupboard. And finally, I'm beginning to feel up to eating a little pureed fruit, i.e. applesauce or papaya. Please note that ALL fruits and vegetables contain SF and that the mode of preparation increases the SF of the plant.

Kate, IBS-D.
