I'm new to message board. I've actually never been on a message board ever! So, I have no idea what I'm doing!
I have irritable bowel syndrome and have for years. I also have mild to moderate relaxed pelvic floor.
My question is quite embarrassing but I've not found help in any form (through GI doctors, internists, gynecologists, colon-rectal doctors). I'm wondering if the IBS, in addition to the pelvic floor problems, is part of the cause of my problem and if the IBS diet will help, or perhaps resolve, the issue.
Here goes: I'm having fecal incontinence during intercourse, only during intercourse. Is this something that anyone else is dealing with or has dealt with?
This is not my only IBS symptom but this is obviously a big concern. This has been going on consistently for about 3 years and off and on for longer than that. This happens 95-100% of the time.
HELP!
Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear no doctor has been able to help you! How frustrating!
I haven't had this problem, but I was wondering if you have tried taking Imodium before having intercourse? Loperamide/Imodium is said to strengthen anal sphincter tone - so maybe this would help. I'm thinking maybe 1 caplet beforehand would be enough, without making you constipated. What type of IBS do you have? A, C, D?

I don't know what type IBS I have. How do I determine the type?
Haven't tried Immodium. I have tried every thing all the doctors have suggested, even having a nerve stimulator device implanted. It didn't help at all so it was removed. I take prescription Miralax every day to attempt to keep me cleaned out, but it's not working. He also suggested Glycerin suppositories before intercourse. Of course the Immodium and Glycerin suppose you know about an hour before intercourse that intercourse is very likely to happen, otherwise you woudn't take them.
Apparently sphincter tone isn't the issue as they say my tone is fine, it's the squeezing of the sphincter muscle that doesn't appear to be working.
Thanks for your input.

Hi Steph, Of course, I haven't had that, but I do know a fair amount about pelvic floor problems and their repercussions,as I have one myself(anorectal junction decent, 3.8 cm). If you can tell me exactly what your pelvic floor problem is, I may be able to give you some advice. Be as specifically technical as you can. I know most of the medical jargon by now. -Bob

I, too, am new to the board, but have had the incontinence you mentioned. Surgery was the only answer. Rectocele, to be exact. I have IBS-D. So it was a bad situation. The surgery was very successful. So I no longer have that problem. I understand your pain. And thanks for sharing....thought I was the only person in the world who had that problem.

Thank you. I, too, am glad to finally hear of someone else who has this same problem.
How long ago did you have your surgery? And, if you don't mind me asking, how old are you? I feel so terribly young to be having this problem. I'm 42 and this has been going on consistently for a few years already. I'm also beginning early menopause. Ugh! Sometimes I feel like I'm 80!
We've talked a little about surgery but the doc says it's possible it won't help, although it's also possible it will help. I'll see him again in a few months and see if he has any new ideas.
Thanks.

IBS-C is Constipation
IBS-D is Diarrhea (sp?)
IBS-A is both
There is a "Common Abbreviations and Explanations" posting in this forum that is very helpful. I'm sorry to hear about your problem. I wish I had an answer for you but I never had this happen. I hope that you and your doctors and able to work out a solution.
