Okay, this is rather emabarassing, but I need some help! Because of my IBS and the frequent bowel movements, straining, cramping, etc. I have developed anal fissures. If you've ever had one, they are soooo painful! I've seen a GI doc and have topical medication. Thing is, after a BM, the rectal muscles spasm for HOURS and it is so painful I can barely tolerate it. I am wondering if anyone has had fissures, and if so, what did you find to be helpful? I've had this for over 6 weeks now. The doc says it can take weeks to heal, but my patience is really about gone. Any advice is much appreciated!

I've had this before. It's so painful!! I was told to use a topical anesthetic before I had a bm. Then I was to use a foam afterwards - I'm sorry I don't remember the name - but it helped relax the spasm. Sometimes I'd use a stool softener, but I had better results when I used a soluble fiber supplement instead.

Have you tried sitz baths? Basically, you soak your butt in a tub of warm water; this will also reduce the spasms.

Here's a link I found w/ more information on how to treat anal fissures: Medicinet.net .

I hope you start feeling better soon.

Hi Michelle, I don't know why, but your doc should've given
you cortisone suppositories, they will deaden the pain and
reduce the spasms. -Bob

Sorry, I don't remember - a month or two? It was about eight years ago.

I also used the suppositories that Bob mentioned.

Are you noticing any improvement at all?

I am IBS-D, and the worst part about me having an attack were the "dry heaves" afterwards. You know when you vomit and after when there's nothing left, you still heave? I'd get that except "down here" instead, after all the BM was out of me. Just awful, those spasms. I wouldn't want to put on my pants afterwards for fear that there was "something else" coming.

Now I take codiene to reset my system after an attack like that. One Tylenol-3 ( or even 1/2) stops the spasms and lets me get off the pot with no worries that my system will start up again. I hope this helps!

I know it's embarrassing asking for help on something like this, but I'm glad you posted!! You're in the right place for some answers from people who've been there and can maybe offer some insight.
