do any Cer's out there take probiotics? if yes, how do they help? ive only read/heard of them being helpful to D's. once i took them and nothing changed. anyways, i buy a dairy-free soy yogurt that has live-active cultures [probiotics] and i recently started drinking soy-kefir. i was wondering if they could be a contributing reason as to why i am not any less C then i was before i started drinking them? thanks guys, for any comments

For how long have you been taking the probiotics? It usually takes 2-3 months to notice a difference.

ive been eating my probiotic soy yogurt waay longer then 3 months..probably since '05? and ive been drinking kefir for 3-4 weeks. when i first began drinking the kefir i noticed a HUGE difference--but then it changed? for no reason. i dont want to rule it out. theres no fiber anyway.

I notice a big difference in my bloating and gassiness if I leave them off. If you have ever seen any of my other posts, the probiotic use has been a HUGE help to my sinuses too. I use Jarrodophilus EPS.

Unfortunately they haven't helped the C at all that I can tell.
Is the Kefir/yogurt helping you? I couldn't tell from your post if they have helped the C or if you haven't been any less C with them.

for some time i was up in the air about fiber supp as you know. remember that 'triple fiber' i tried? after that i stopped psyllium..then slowly started adding in again, careful not to over-do it, get gas and get C. things went well and at a peak i tried some strawberry soy kefir i saw at whole foods. i just took "shots" of it--no more then 2 OZ cuz its sour and at first it was gross to me. i immediately felt relief and saw..ahem..MORE results--but the *POOF!* out of nowhere someone deemed me unworthy of bathroom breaks and im back at square one.....again. by now im quite familiar with this place. i hate this so much! i used to have a life..things used to just "be" and now? its all around my IBS. everything i eat is for IBS and for nothing. harrumph. if i couldnt be slightly comical about it i think id really be in a hole.
sorry for the long story. im not any less C then i was when i began drinking the kefir.

i know that kefir contains 10 probiotic-living cultures. how can i be sure which one would be the best for me? i actually just read another of your replies recommending this same probiotic jarrodophilis. do you know by chance, if they happen to contain any gelatin in the capsule? or any preservatives? also--as a C, do you notice a big difference in your BMs? idont mean to be forward--i would LOVE relief from my gas/bloating. those 2 in-combination *i think* is what causes my C!! those 2 things really stress me out alot. anyways thanks again for the reply! get back when you can--bye

It is horrible isn't it. How our lives revolve around how our bowels behave...or rather, don't behave.
How about starting the Acacia again, in addition to the psyllium you are taking? Or increasing the psyllium? I don't know. I'm still indecisive about fiber supplement too. Don't know if they cause harm (gas, bloat) or help. At least you know your not alone, sweetie. Big hugs!

how about cutting out soy? You can get Kefir starter and add rice milk to it. I think that's what Kandee does. I don't eat anything soy because I'm afraid of gas/bloat. Except for a little soy sauce (Braggs) once in a while.

that was sweet *HUGS* back! i am still taking the acacia--1 TBSP in the AM-i find that if i drink tea and acacia around 7ish it helps a BM happen. but usually im so short on sleep from the night before that i rarely am awake before that time. i havent really been thinking about acacia-increasing. do you think i ought to try? im barely getting by on comfort now so trying and having it not work really couldnt hurt me---but i am so leary!!!!
as far as the psyllium goes, it does cause extra bloating. but i take it at night to avoid that. i should think i wouldnt be too bloated during the day but i always am! last week i did the B.T.C. diet and just ate rice/peas, pretzels, weetabix, mangoes, pepp/cham. tea, blueberry juice and water and noticed i was less bloated. but then that means that is all i can eat? grr with this syndrome!! im glad i have a similar friend. *HUGS* for you too hun!!

When I took Psyllium I found that I was bloated throughout most of the day. Have you ever thought of getting a mixture of fibres? For example flax has both soluble and insoluble fibre and it might not cause so much bloating and gas.

I am C. I take 4 probiotics/day (2 am/2 pm). I've been taking florajen. I think it's helping...I also take acacia and that helps. Between the 2, I usually have movement every day or every other.
Hang in there. I know this sucks.

Hi! http://store.yahoo.com/iherb/acidophilus2.html This should tell you all you need to know about the jarrow product. It specifically states it is suitable for vegans.
As to the jarrow making a difference in my actual bowel activity - yes things go easier when I'm taking them. Not as forced. However, I read this entire thread, and I'm a HUGE fan of the Acacia. The acacia feeds the bacteria in the jarrow (prebiotic/probiotic) and the combination is wonderful! My "normal" before IBS-C was a BM twice a day. I am now back to that pattern and it is wonderful!! Acacia and water are essential along with plenty of IF. Once you find your balance....well, that is the journey.
I don't mean to gush. I don't mean to imply I don't have bad days. When I eat something I shouldn't (ice cream, too much dairy of any kind - and I love the stuff! - , too greasy, too much food at once,) I pay in cramps, gas and spasms. Stress is my biggest trigger, so I have to try to manage that too. It is a daily thing like everyone else, but nothing I build my world around...just part of my life. I adjust my food ect.. when I'm having a bad day, but otherwise, things are pretty ok right now!
Hope this helps. Sorry to ramble.

Just the flax? How much per day?
Thanks. I'm trying to increase my flax to see if it helps. I've been at 1 T a day...and increasing it to 1 1/2 so far...till I get up to 2 or even 3 depending on how it goes.

Never, never, never did I think this would be my life. Revolving around my bowels and BMs. Life can be cruel and so twisted. My GI doc said this is one of the cruelest thing a person who had had an ED could get. With having to remain on restrictive diets and the false sense of fat. Not to mention the pain.
He said people with EDs are good enough at beating themselves up and thinking they deserve pain...and the IBS helps reinforce those feelings. I know it does for me.

It seems to be enough for me. The box says 2 is the most of this to take. Supplements are expensive, so I'm limiting mine as much as possible. Iherb is a great place to save money on name brands that you can trust. I hope this helps.

Hi Ashley, Say, weren't you doing really well when you were in Croatia? Like so well, as though you didn't even have IBS If so, there's obviously something to that. Could you recrea te the diet you were eating there? Obviously, you can't exac tly recreate the scenery unless you had the hollodeck of the Enterprise available to you. Maybe you can devise reasonable facimilies of the conditions there the that made you so stab le? Just an idea. -Bob

Say Beth, Did Dr.J say that? Have you recently seen him? If so, did he say when he's going to start the new med trials? I might email him or Margo about the fed budget cuts on dig- estive disease research as it obviously directly affects him . He may already know though. Also, when I iron out my new theory, I might bounce it off him. -Bob

Yes, I use just the ground flax seeds, or if I'm out, I have FibreSmart, which is made with flax, as a standby until I get some more flax seeds. I take up to 2 tablespoons. I'm IBS-A so I really have to be careful with how much. Lately though I've been trying Benefibre but I tend to feel C with it. It might be because I'm not taking enough.

...is it okay to take them with a cup of hot tea? Or do they need to be taken with room temperature liquid. If so, how long would I have to wait after taking them before I can drink hot tea?
thanks!

that was a great idea, thank you for suggesting it to me. i think the whole thing of feeling better there..was b/c i was constantly doing activity. be it walking, swimming, scooting or 4-wheeling, my body was always busy in motion. here, i try to get out but on my days off when id like to run, its either fridged cold or rainy and miserable.
my diet was fairly simple: mostly lots of fresh fruits and i always made sure to have salad. before iknew about oils being a trigger i would put some on my salads along with vinegar and never noticed a cramp! but the oil i used was grown by family on very nice and well-maintained farms. also, i remember having rice, stir-fry of tofu and other assorted "meats" over noodles or sometimes plain. usually some bread slices. not too many sweets since we hadnt learned about a vegan store that was over there yet. i am finding out that really, its very high-fat foods and meals and sweets that get to me! but unfortunately, as a girl, its hard to reject those sweets
ive been trying to use rice as my staple for lunch and dinner and find that its filling enough for the period of hunger, but not over-filling where i bloat. but being on such a bland diet is so boring sometimes! thanks for the suggestion! i just try to remind myself of croatia in the house with pictures and such. i have that picture as my background. hopefully it works b/c its one of my favorite pictures i took. and it is so pretty!!!

no need to apologize for rambling *OR* gushing hearing that IBS [especially C] is going well for someone lets me [and im sure other Cers too] know that it gets better. and if im not better right this moment today, its only a matter of adjustment. you sound like you've got a good way of keeping stress under control. sometimes i find myself so overwhelmed, that my facial expression will actually look like a permanant frown!
your IBS case sounds *exactly* just like mine! i get all the same problems [gassy, bloated and spasms] when i overeat, undereat and then overeat, have something really greasy, really fatty, or really sweet. stress is something that i notice creeping into my schedule daily. but when im working [babysitting] i dont/cant focus on it b/c my focus must remain on the kids. sometimes its hard when i come across a stressful thought in my day and i cant give full attention to it. i hate when i dismiss it and think about it later b/c then it just adds up.
as with me, prior to IBS diagnosis--i was going normally 2X/day. sophomore year was the last sane year of school i had as far as my health goes. and i just found out yesterday from my mom that ive always had a "C" problem, even when i was little! so now im only inspired to fix it. although some days, that thought is far from my mind since i get so frustrated at my "failed attemps"
so for the acacia to fully work, does it need to be taken WITH a probiotic to activate its effects? ive been taking mine now for over a year and i really cant tell if its helping. using it in combo with a probiotic makes sense though. im going to skim your site you sent me. if its suitable for vegans, im definately going to order! especially after the success you seem to have with it thank you!

yah. ive seen alot of other posters say they have just as much difficulty. i didnt have any soy yogurts last week but still had slight bloating from the food i did eat. i was on the BTC diet BTW and was too afraid to add those in after i took my laxatives. i want/need to find a naturpathic doctor for advice and checkups. mine i dont think would understand my natural remedies and the ones i want to try.

I don't think a probiotic effects the usefullness of the Acacia, because I was seeing results with it several months before I began taking my Jarrow. I think the Jarrow may enhance the usefullness, but they work as well independently.
I hope you will soon see great results! Keep us posted!
