sorry...just one more thing! i wondered how many people out there have gone for food intolerance testing? Ive asked doctors here and none of them have really recommended it and as its quite costly i dont want to have it done uneccessarily. its just that everyone seems to be intolerant to certain particular foods, so if i knew which ones, i could definitely eliminate them, because at the moment im playing a guessing game. what do other people think? Kat x

Its usually just a matter of trial and error! I can be difficult to figure out sometimes so keeping a food diary is helpful!

If you're *allergic* to a particular food, you can have a blood test for food allergies. But if you're *intolerant* of a particular food (either because you have IBS or just because), there is no test the doctors can run--it's just a matter of trial and error.

Be careful of fruit or fruit juice.....that's fructose intolerance. Many things have it like honey and corn syrup. READ LABELS. I find eating just ONE strawberry or Cherry can send me straight to the john....! There's an atricle just posted abt FRUCTOSE u may want to read. I learned alot.....
Also, be careful not to have any milk products - that lactose intolerance.
And.....spicy things, tomato sauce, chocolate, citric fruits esp. bother me.
And NO CARBONATED beverages........I sometimes let it sit so the fizz goes and then I can have a little. Oh....no caffeine.
BUT, everybody is different, it's trial and error, so I'd try eliminating these type foods if you get symptoms.
Hope this helps. Am sure there are more things. Look under food intolerances in the site......meaning do a search.
Hope this helps!!!!!!

I've been interested in having a food intolerance test for some time. They cost around £250 which is a lot of money, but i think it could be valuable. I've found two particular websites - www.alcat.com and www.yorktest.com - please have a look and tell me what you think of them?

Hi - I've seen a preliminary clinical research study on the york test that looked promising. If the study is deemed credible it will be published (probably in Lancet) sometime this fall or winter. When that happens, I'll have more info. Until then I don't quite know what to say. The tests are very expensive, and I can't point to published studies in their support. Right now I'm in "wait and see" mode, and if news comes through I'll definitely post it.

I know the tests are expensive, but ive been playing the guess and elimination game for months now and havent got anywhere - at least the tests give you something more definitive. Plus i have spent £500 in the last month on seeing specialists, buying supplements (spent about £60 on some off your site!) but £250 may be a large amount but when put in context with all the time and money spent in the last 6months trying to work this IBS out, i think it could be a good investment in the long term. I am seriously thinking of doing the york test one - if i do, i'll let you know how i get along and whether it is worth it or not!

Have you considered a more basic test? I know the old fashioned ones are a bit dodgy, but I had one years ago when they put electrodes on my toe (!) and it seemed to come up with the goods. All the stuff that I now know is bad for me was on the list the doc gave me. I've no idea where you could get one or how much it would cost in the US, but maybe it's worth considering b4 you spend $250?

How do you get tested for food allergies? Can just a regular doctor do that?
