my doctor has just diagnosed me with ibs after a long period of tests and ruling things out so I do feel confident that she did not miss anything. however, after looking at this site and reading comments on the board i am confused about my diagnosis! while i suffer from all of the other symptoms of ibs mentioned here, i rarely have crippling abdominal pain. my pain has been almost entirely in my lower back in what feels to be my rectum/that general area. if i have my pain here and not in my abdomen does this mean that perhaps the doctor was wrong and i do not in fact have ibs? do other people with ibs experience pain here?

Hi, and welcome to the boards.
IBS is different for different people, there is not any set rules of where or how pain should be. IBS is a catch all phrase/diagnosis the medical community uses when they don't know what's wrong with you, but they've ruled out other illnesses like Chrons, etc.

When I have a really bad reaction to some food I can get the abdominal cramping and pain, but when I came to this website almost all of my discomfort was lower/rectal pain. Everyone is different around here but you are not alone in this location of pain. When I stray into "trigger land" I pay with that rectal pain first. Good luck on the diet and sure hope you see the success I have when I carefully follow Heather's advice.

Hi Aubs, If your pain in the lower back is on the left side,
then that is a result of stool and gas pressure from your
sigmoid colon. A vast majority of IBS-C's get that. Your
rectum is not near the lower back, it's just above the anal
sphincter, and rectal pain is a literal pain in the ass, not
your back. -Bob
