Weaning off of AD

I am currently in the process of weaning myself off of my anti-depressant. My doc had prescribed it to help with the IBS. I was taking 100mg of nortryptline every day. It did help stablize me, but I just cant take the dry mouth and heart burn that it causes anymore. I went down to 75mg for a couple of weeks. Last week I switched down to 50mg. My dry mouth and heartburn have been so much better, but I am afraid that I knocked myself back into IBS irregularity. I haven't had a normal BM since I went to 50mg, and the few that I have had have not really been anything substantial. I'm pretty C. I really do not want to go back up on the AD if I don't have to. Does anyone have any ideas about something else that I could maybe do to help me? Would upping my acacia help any? I already take 18grams of acacia a day - and I think that is on the high side....

Just looking to see if anyone has any advise. I do not go back to my GI doc for a little over a month. And to be honest - he has been all gungho with weaning me off the ADs anyway...

Have you tried increasing your IF intake and the intensity of your exercise? Those are the first things I do if I stray back into C territory.....

Thanks, AC! I have increased my IF a bit. I will try the exercise suggestion - good suggestion!

I'm D, not C, so all my suggestions would be the standard ones - more water, more exercise, more IF, carefully, if you can tolerate it. I can say, though, that you could up your Acacia. My best dose is 8 teaspoons which is 20 grams and Heather says that Cs may need to go up to 30 grams. I'd say it's worth a try.

I hope you feel better soon. Take care.

Well then that brings up another question. If I try to increase the acacia, I am not sure WHEN to add more. Right now I take 1 TBS. before breakfast, lunch and dinner. Do you think maybe another dose before bed? And how much should I increase it by?

When you said you were taking 18 grams, I thought you meant you were taking 18 grams of SF, which would be 7.2 teaspoons of Acacia. If you're already taking 3 Tablespoons (9 teaspoons) of Acacia per day, that's 22.5 grams of SF. Okay, you could still go up to 4 Tablespoons of Acacia per day which would be 30 grams of SF.

I go up on my Acacia very slowly, so I'd probably add 1/4 teaspoon per day, do that for 3 days, then another 1/4 teaspoon, and so on. Heather says you can go up faster - 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per day, if I remember correctly. I think before bed sounds good or if you don't want to eat or drink right before bed, then just add a little more to each of the doses you're currently taking so eventually you're taking 1 Tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon at each meal.

HTH (along with exercise, fluid, and IF).

Take care.

I thought that 1 level teaspoon of acacia is 2 grams of SF. 3 teaspoons is the same as 1 tablespoon so 1 tablespoon would be 6 grams. 3 times a day would be 18 grams. Do I have something wrong?

There are 2.5 grams fiber in a teaspoon, not 2....so that's were you are getting in the extra 4.5 grams fiber that you weren't aware of!

Yes, 3 tsp = 1 TBS....but one teaspoon does not = 2 grams fiber.

Well I am feeling a bit better - still C, but not quite as bad. I am still at the 50mg dose. I might keep it here at this dose another week before dropping down to 25mg. One thing I have noticed - and this could be my imagination - but I've felt really down in the dumps and just in a general lousy mood all this week. I don't have any explanation for this - I just feel grumpy. I wasn't on the nortriptyline for depression or mood, but do you think that because I was on it and I am reducing the dosage that I am having an emotional reaction? I know it's such a small dose, so I find it hard to believe that could be it, but I can't think of anything else that would be making me so irritable.....any thoughts?

I dunno, but everyone I know is in a cruddy mood too, including me. I'm blaming it on it's being February in a northern climate. Spring can't be here soon enough!

AC, Did the Chicago ground hog see his shadow or something
like that? Our weather has been great the last two days. It's
been a tad cold, but unbelievably sunny. So sunny that I've
had to wear my sunglasses. Don't worry, when I come down there
,I'll make sure I bring some good weather with me.

Michelle, I think your grumpiness is a direct result of
decreasing your nortyptine dose. Nortryptine is relatively
heavy duty stuff and when you come off it, it does produce
a withdrawal effect. -Bob

Do you think this could also be making me tired and run down? I've just been feeling really off lately.

Michelle, Oh absolutely! You might want to try doing a reduced
dose every other day instead of every day. I think that will
help-Bob
