what the heck...I'm almost stable, then the pain transfers from my abdomen down to my hips. any ideas?

Did you do any exercise or sleep the wrong way? I don't believe your hip pain is an IBS symptom.

someone told me that gas can build up down there? maybe not.

If this is a one time thing I would see if it goes it away.
If it does just go away great! If it persists and gets worse I would see a doc.
If this is something that happens to you frequently I would also go see a doc (a rheumatologist perhaps?). Hip pain if common might be a sign of something serious.

It could be referred pain from severe cramps/spasms. Sometimes I get lower back pain or pain in my rib area during an attack or from gas.
