Barley Flakes

I made some barley flakes for breakfast yesterday and they were yummy. I cooked them the same as rolled oats. The flavor is a bit similar to oatmeal, but a little chewier. I seem to be tolerating barley ok and it's a nice SF alternative to oats. I'm going to add the leftovers to some soup.

Is this a breakfast cereal? Barley is a soluble fiber whole grain, right? I need to get more whole grains in my diet. This might be a good way. How was it?

I found these by chance at the bins in my grocery store (where you can buy nuts, grains, etc. in bulk). They look very similar to rolled oats (the old fashioned kind - not instant). The price was right - 99 cents a pound!

They take a little longer to cook than rolled oats. I cooked 1 cup of barley flakes in 2 cups of water on a low heat until all the water was absorbed (about 20 min.)

When they are cooked they look just like cooked oats. They are quite nutty tasting and a little bit firmer than oats.
