Less then one week since diagnosed with IBS-C. My GI doctor has prescribed Zalnorm and Krystolose for one month. He said NOTHING about changing my diet. I basically found this web site and started following the diet from what I've read. There's enough on the web site to get started until I get my book.
Last night I decided to try butter on my baked potato. I've gone a week without dairy, coffee, or meat of any kind. I have been eating brown rice, puree asparagus, sardines, wheat crackers, whole grains, granola. Maybe I'm doing too much? I do have chai tea that has 2 mg caffeine per serving. Could wheat be a problem? Should I get tested for any food allergies?

Butter is dairy. Some have problems with Wheat as well especially on an empty stomach.

Butter is an absolute no-no. Try a non hydrogenated margarine instead - and in VERY small amounts. Whole grains is insoluble fibre. You should probably switch to a white bread for now. Try fresh french bread from your bakery. White meat is safe to eat - I would add that back.

Hi Sleepytime, in addition to what Alicia and Joe said, the answers to your last two questions is yes. I guess your doc has not tested for celiac? Btw, Noting that you're from Elgin. We're going to have the 2nd Chi-town get-together some time between March 3 and 11 , if you're interested. I'm advertizing early to get ahead of the game. -Bob

Until your book arrives, you can read about Heather's approach here. Among other things, this will tell you which tests you need to have - like the one for celiac disease - before you can get a firm IBS diagnosis.
It does sound like you're doing too much - wheat crackers, whole grains, and granola are all very high in IF. You need to be eating those carefully to begin with, which means well-cushioned with SF. Granola is also often high in fat. Ditto sardines, if they're packed in oil.
You might take a look at the Heather's Break The Cycle diet. This is something you could try for a few days (no more than 3) and then start adding in IF, protein, and fat as described.
HTH.

...it's WHOLEwheat that is as it's high in IF. I know some US products call wholewheat wheat but this leads to confusion on here!
Just so everyone knows....

BUTTER is a dairy product, as well as high in saturated & transfats, so I suspect that is the root of your attack. Also, the tannins in the chai tea could be irritating you.
