Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone eats grapes out there, how they tolerate them etc? I used to LOVE grapes but since I got really nervous about fruits and veg, I haven't tried them.. probably for years! I'd really like to have them again, but wanted to get some feedback from everyone else before I dive right in, hee hee.
Cheers! --Steph

LOVE them things! Yes, I eat them all the time. However, Steph, when I first got stable, I'd get a rumbly tummy after a dish of grapes. Then, after awhile, I could eat as many as I wanted. I think my body just had to get used to them gradually.
Where are you finding them at this time of year? In CANADA? REALLY? Ooooh, I may have to make a trip up there....

Um, yeah, I dunno if they are actually in season right now or if I could find them anywhere, I just really want some grapes, darnit!
I'm glad you can handle them, I think I might try just having 2 or 3 at first and see how I do... Just if everyone else jumped in and said, "No! They make me so sick!" I might have stayed away.
Mmm, so glad you can have them!!
Cheers, --Steph

I have grapes sometimes and I'm fine with it. You can or should be able to get grapes almost all year round at your grocery store since they import many things from warmer climates.

I eat grapes with no problems, now, after getting some SF in me, of course. I avoided them like the plague for months after starting Heather's diet, then finally tried them when I made this pasta salad. I did fine with them in the salad and now I eat them straight.
It might be my imagination, but I think I tolerate the red seedless better than the green seedless.
Enjoy!

I do ok if I just have a few after SF... but I don't have them very much because I LOVE grapes and find it next to impossible to just have a few!
And yes you can find grapes in Canada at this time of year! Shipped from somewhere warm. Not as good as in the summer but still available!

I can handle a small handful of grapes. After that, I get gassy. Not terribly uncomfortably so, but enough so I know not to eat too many.

I can have about 10-15 and then that is enough for me. I just make sure that I chew them really good.

Grapes are the absolutely worst fruit for me. I can safely eat five after a meal once in a while and no more.
-------------------- IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

Hey Wind, I'm the same way. I call them "Evil acid fiber bombs from hell." They were one of the first foods I figured out I couldn't eat--
Age 6-- apples, asperagus and artichokes (the three A's!) Age 7-- grapes, pears, avacados

I can handle asparagus, but grapes--no way! Avocado? Never! Aie, I have to run for cover.
MELONS, though, are the positive worst. I can't believe I lived through cantelope.
Have you ever had Kohlorabi? Now that's an evil acid fiber bomb.
Sauerkraut--let's not go there. And oranges! Pineapple. Olives, no way!
I love the term, though--"acid fiber bombs."
Kate.

Hello, everyone! Grapes have never disagreed with me. Steph, you mention problems with fruits and veggies? It sounds like a lot of you guys have had that kind of trouble. I never have. Why do fruits and veggies cause IBS attacks? I'm grateful they don't for me, because I'm trying to eat more of them lately. Good luck with the grapes, Steph!

I can eat grapes, no problem, but grape juice? Forget it. It kills me, even the "natural, no sugar added" kind.

Yay! Someone else who can eat fruits and veggies! I was starting to feel like a freak or something! Heh.
Some people are very sensitive to the insoluble fiber and have problems digesting it. Others have problems with the fructose that's in fruits. And for *some* people, they find that they can eventually handle them all again, once their system has stabilized, but others just can't.
Some fruits are notoriously harder to digest - skins on any fruit increase the insoluble-fiber aspect drastically. That's why grapes are hard for a lot of people. Personally, I can sit down and eat half a bunch of the things, and I'm grateful for that!

i'm starting to think i'm in the same camp - i still haven't braved a salad, but i'm realizing that i can eat more veggies than i'd thought. (they never gave me problems, but i was scared.) sure, a lot of it's psychological, but it feels so good to be eating them again.

I was *really* petrified to try different things at first... once I tried a few things and they didn't hurt me, I got brave and really went nuts. And so far, there isn't much of anything that I can think of that bothers me. Potato skins and green peppers, that's about it. I can even eat salads.
What's funny is that I'm enjoying fruits and vegetables a LOT more than I did a few years ago. Nothing quite like thinking you'd never be able to eat them again to REALLY make you want them! Heh.

That's where I am right now. Totally terrified to try anything different. Ever since my gallbladder surgery and my IBS being turned upside down, I'm scared to eat anything. I've lost 70 pounds now. Great to lose the weight, terrible way to lose it. I am going to be a bit more adventurous over the Christmas break while I am home and "safe." Once school starts again, I can't try new foods. It's too risky...I'm running out of sick days!

This may not be a satifying answer, but steam it! When I can't resist the salad my wife is eating - and I know I can't handle raw veggies very well - I steam them slightly or put it in the microwave for 30 secs. Its not the same, some people will think its gross, but it does the trick. Dan

It's really funny, but they actually do feel good alot of the time. You'll figure out your "list." And, that list does change. However, when you apply Heather's guidelines & eat with SF, generally they're okay.
Heather's asparagus sauce is awesome, by the way. You can adjust/modify according to personal tolerances. I LOVE THIS ONE!! It is in the newsletter archive: "1/26/05 - Lemon Asparagus Pasta & Snacks for IBS." Sometimes I give it an asian twist with soy sauce (omit faux parmesan) or adapt it into a soup with veg. stock. (It's great with potatoes, incidentally, or spaghetti squash, & even rice!)
And, for the record, Beano does work! (At least for me)
Food processors are great toys for making food safer. Not only do they puree, but they're great for funky ultra fine chopping. However, I know that certain specific foods, even food processed violently disagree with me and thus I avoid them; I run from them.
Kate.

Meep - since your gallbladder surgery, are you on meds? There's a specific med you might need - probably for life, but it could mean that your IBS will go away completely. Let me find the link for you. I would say, on a weekend or a night that you don't have to go anywhere the next day, try a very small salad after a very safe meal with lots of SF. Make sure that you CHEW VERY THOROUGHLY ( I speak from experience - don't ask)
