I am just curious as to what kinds of oatmeal people eat. I use Quaker Instant Oatmeal, especially the Apple Cinnamon. I want to try some others and would love everyones input

I use plain ol' old fashioned oatmeal, made with soy milk and a good shake of cinnamon. then I throw in a half cup of peaches or pears.

Do you mean the old fashioned rolled oats? And do you cook them on the stove-top, or just pour hot boiled water over a bowl of dry oats, and add soy milk, etc. I love oatmeal, but I haven't tried it for this diet because of the possiblity of it making me worse.

I use the ones that are instant, they come in a box with individual packets. I just add water and put it in the microwave. My favorite have cinnamon in them for extra flavor!

Yep, old fashioned rolled oats. I buy Quaker or Shurfine (a regional store brand). I cook them with one cup of soy milk, not water. Because I fix my breakfast at work, I usually fix it in the microwave. It has a different texture if cooked on the stovetop at home.
Oatmeal is my breakfast at least 5 days a week. I started eating it to feel more stable in the morning. Now, I just REALLY like my oatmeal. Oatmeal is my buddy, but it doesn't work for all. Someone around here around here calls it outmeal instead. You will have to experiment a bit to find out if it works for you, not just with oatmeal, but with other foods too. Good luck.

Hmm okay. I have quaker plain rolled oats here, and I always used to just boil the kettle and pour the hot water over a bowl of dried oats. Woulf this be problematic?? Should I prepare them in a different way, would they be safer?? Ex: Stove-top. The microwave is something I don't use often. I've never cooked oats in there before. Just milk and on high for a minute or two? (I have the flavoured packets as well. The brown sugar ones are really good! But I wouldn't use them if I were just starting out on the diet. I would stick to plain at first. But they are safe, I'm pretty sure.)

I am curious.. any family or friends of mine who know I fight the IBS (C type) have recommended or talked about how oatmeal is the problem solver. Oatmeal makes them GO!!! I have tried it a couple of diff times but doesn't work for me.. have to give it up since it makes me worse?? I don't understand why is that?? If it is a soluble fiber why does it give me so much trouble. I am just really bummed that everything that seems to work for everyone else just won't work for me??? Am I ever going to find anything that works? I would like to know if anyone else has a similar finding on this?

Old Fashioned slow cooking Quaker Oats is healthier for you than the Instant oatmeal. The Instant oatmeal has already gone through some process and it turns into sugar quicker in your bloodstream than the slow cooking oatmeal. When there is a rapid rise in blood sugar, it causes inflammation, and that inflammation can cause problems with your skin and digestive track if you have an over abundance of yeast in your system.

I have used Quaker brand 'Quick.' It doesn't come in individual packets, but in one bag. It says on the bag that it cooks in 3 to 4 minutes. Maybe that is the problem with oatmeal. People are simply purchasing the wrong types.

Hi Alli,
For me I use the Quaker Quick Oats,because I cook in Microwave. it might be a different texture than what your'e used to,but it's easier for me this way. I use 1/2 cup of oats,and 1 cup of water,in a microwave safe dish,with a cover (loose so it doesn't fly all over the place) for 165 seconds,then I put some applesuace on top for flavor. You can start with 1/3 Oats,and 2/3 water if you want. I can't have eggs or any dairy so this is very helthy and nutritious. Hope you like it. The flavored oatmeal packets are full of salt/sugar....bad. So have Good Day!

Yes, I believe I have the same kind. The quick oats, they come on one bag. Maybe the stove or microwave would be better then just boiled water. But I think I'm going to switch to the old fashioned brand of rolled oats. Would that even make a difference? Anyway, thanks for your reply.

I think you should try the old fashioned 10-15 minutes oats. The less processing your food goes through in manufacturing, the healthier it is for you. You have nothing to lose by trying it. If you find it doesn't work for you, you can always go back to the quick oats. Good luck Alli.

I love old fashioned oats too, not so mushy as the quick oates!! There is so much you can do with oatmeal...I cook it on top of the stove with vanilla soy milk, sometimes add peaches and cinnamon, other times I'll add banana (thanks to an Idea from Kree) and a little chopped pecans. Sometimes I'll add pure maple syrup instead of brown sugar for flavor...Try yogurt (soy) mixed in it too (mmmm...good).

I also eat Quaker Instant Oatmeal (original/plain and Cinnamon Roll), which come in the individual packets. Sometimes I add walnuts before I microwave it; the walnuts are so good with the Cinnamon Roll flavor!
I think most oatmeal is safe for most people with IBS as long as you watch out for added dairy, HFCS, and sugar substitutes (sorbitol etc).

I have old fashioned rolled oats for breakfast every morning. I love it and it's probably my safest food, actually. I cook it with applesauce for about 2-3 mins in the microwave and add lots of cinnamon. I just prefer the rolled oats to quick cooking or instant oatmeal because it's less mushy.
That said, not everyone can tolerate oats. I think it can be gas-forming and bloating for some people - it IS a whole grain, and while it contains *a lot* of SF for a whole grain (about 50/50 IF/SF I think), it still has IF. So it depends on your tolerance for whole grains, IF and potentially gas-forming foods I think.

I HATE oatmeal! It's GROSS and DISGUSTING!
Okay, that felt good.
Now, having vented, I gotta say, when I'm having an attack, that's what hubby alway fixes for me -- Quaker Instant Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal -- and it really seems to help! I have to psych myself out as I'm eating it -- you know -- "Snickers Bar... Snickers Bar.... Snickers Bar......" -- 'cause if I focused on the look and texture of what I was putting my mouth, I'd puke.

Hi there. I eat Quaker instant Maple Brown Sugar oatmeal as part of my breakfast every morning. It's wonderful. Not too much sugar, just enough calories, enough fiber. I have oatmeal and a pear or an apple every morning. My tummy likes it. I've tried the real cooking kind of oatmeal, but I don't like the texture. Me, I just use plain water, not milk. I tried adding soy milk once and thought it was gross.

I buy it at Whole Foods, Wild Oatss, and nearly every HFS carries it. The only one I've ever seen is the one made by Ancient Harvest.
