Hi everyone! I was diagnosed with IBS yesterday. I have been dealing with it for years, but I was always scared to go to the doctor because I didn't want them to tell me that it's "all in my head." So I finally went and she didn't act like that at all. However, she prescribed Zelnorm to me. I haven't started taking it yet, though, because all the research I have done on Zelnorm says that it is for constipation. However, I have more problems with diarrhea than constipation. The doctor I saw yesterday is not my regular doctor, but I have made a follow-up appointment with my regular doctor for next month. Should I call my regular doctor and talk with her now, or just wait until next month? Or should I try to take the Zelnorm anyway? Thanks!

Hi Carla, Welcome to the Boards! If you have mostly D, DON'T
take the Zelnorm, it is for constipation only, it will make
your D worse. -Bob

I agree with Bob. Even if you have D SOME of the time, Zelnorm is probably not right for you. If you have IBS D and C, then you're considered an A (Alternating between the two). For that, this diet is best. You need to start a soluble fibre supplement ASAP (Like Acacia, Benefiber, Citrucel, Equalactin, etc.) Start with a VERY low dose and VERY slowly increase it. It you start with too much too fast, you will only end up with bloating, cramping and possibly more D.
Also, follow the dietary guidelines on this website. Drink TONS of peppermint tea - for me, it's a miracle drug. Several hot strong cups a day can help not only keep the pain away, but keep the colon relaxed and not spasming (causing D and C).
Good luck and a heartfelt welcome to the boards! You are NOT alone!!!!!!!!

OMG!! I had the same problem! I haven't officially been diagnosed with IBS, and they actually think I have ulcerative colitis, but the Dr. perscribed me Zelnorm. After reading about it, I changed Dr's. Now I have to redo the cholonosopy, but its worth it to actually know whats wrong. Don't take the Zelnorm - wait for your regular dr. and tell him/her your concerns!

It just completely blows me away that your doctors are prescribing zelnorm when you're having problems with D. It says right on the commercial that if you have EVER experienced D, not to use it!!! EVER......
Unbelievable!! I'm sorry to hear that. I would definitely hold off on that.

I can't believe a dr. would prescribe it to someone with D - when it says right on the commercial! sheesh.

My mom has Crohn's Disease, but all the years I was growing up, they thought she had ulcerated collitis. I feel really sorry for you, because I saw what she went through. Now, she is on some medication and she is so much better!!!
