I am a typical male who doesn't want to give in to this but I really have to. I do so well on an IBS safe diet and then I drop off to the old ways. I am IBS C but for some reason, since I had my Nissen fundoplication in April '03, I cannot tolerate any form of fiber without intense delayed emptying and pain. Tried a lot of fiber supplements, soluble and insoluble, lots of water and all I get is more C and pain. NOT to mention the really intense gas/bloat which is VERY embarrassing when I work in an office where I am surrounded by over 60 people. I just returned there after LTD for 18 months but the hardest part to deal with is this gas/bloat. I am on a strict time clock and I think the stress of that adds to it all. The gas/bloat is more intense after I eat so I start not eating and that's worse for me. They want me to maintain a high protein diet as I have lost so much weight. I am on Nexium for the HH and I keep searching Heather's enteric peppermint capsules but I'm afraid they'll flare up my reflux. Will they? I know, typical male who searches very little but asks a lot. Thanks

The best thing for you would be to bring strong fennel tea with a little peppermint to work in a thermos. I wish Heather would make fennel oil capsules! Make sure to drink a lot and just plain sit on the pot a lot-give yourself time. This helps greatly with bloat from needing to go. Even if you are C and nothing comes out the relaxing on the pot helps a lot. Sometimes I do it for 5 minutes before going somewhere and am benefitted.
-------------------- IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

Have you tried things like Colace or Miralax? Colace is an over the counter stool softener(not a stimulant laxative, don't worry), and Miralax you can get from your doctor.

...try and move as often as possible: walk round the office, stand up & stretch, go to the copier, get a million glasses of water, whatever. You really need to try and keep moving!
Some people with reflux are okay with the peppermint caps, some aren't. The only way you'll know if you are is to try them.

I found this old post. Fennel capsules . Not sure when they will be out though. Hopefully soon! I have seen them in the HFS though, if your interested. I've never tried them yet, but I might start them! It just seems like I already take so many supplements.

Hi Jerbear, Say, have you tried an SSRI antidepressant. I was having big time problems until I started taking one(Paxil). Now, at least I'm going every day, it's not a lot of fun, but at least it's happening.
Where are you from in NB? My Mother was born and raised in Chatham which is part of what's called Miramachi City, and a guy I knew well, Gary Bernard was(maybe still is) mayor of the place. I spent at least a half dozen summers up there when I was a kid. I mostly lived at my Uncle's camp in a small place on the Bathurst road called Bartibog, the river from there runs into the Miramachi. I've caught many a trout out of that river. Ah, the good old days . -Bob

Even if it's doesn't help your IBS, they really can help you cope with the IBS better.

...some people can't cope with them. But they are worth trying as they can be so effective.

Hey Bob I've tried the SSRI's even Paxil. Couldn't stand the side effects. Tried Remeron, Celexa and a few others too. Welbrutin was the worst for me. I'm currently on small dose Elavil for pain and my esophageal spasms. My doc is thinking that is what may be adding to the bloat/gas. But it's soo bad I can't take it at work. I do move around a lot, too much for my boss' liking. I'll have to get back on the fennel. Might try the peppermint caps but like someone posted below, I'm afraid it will flare the old reflux, and trust me, that's bad enough now I'm from Fredericton, the good old capital city, just a few hours south of Miramichi. Small world eh? Been to the spot a fair bit though. Used to travel to Chatham and the area for work a lot a few years ago. Excellent fishing up there. Keep in touch. And Thanks!
