Does the gas ever go away? For those who take this as their daily SFS, did you ever have gas with it? Do you have it after reaching your maintainance dose?
I've been on it about 5 weeks and I have wicked, smelly gas. Is this just part of IBS and not to blame on the Acacia? Or is it time to say "Acacia isn't the one for me"?
It is getting more stool out of me, but at a very gassy, smelly price. Does the body ever get used to it? Should it have by now?
Thanks to anyone.

I don't know if I will get in trouble to suggesting this or not cuz I personally don't take Acacia YET.... I have some to try but I really like my pills I take now..... but anyway... maybe you can stop taking it and try something else and see if the smelly gas goes away?? If so, then you know what caused it....if not, then start taking it again....and eliminate out other things. Just a suggestion

Mine didn't go away until I stopped using it. I am, for the most part, completely stable. I think it was just time to give it up. Good luck, I know exactly what you mean. I know I could hardly stand to be around myself, I felt soooo bad for my family.

My opinion on smelly gas is that it is *gross alert* passing old stool from being C. So I think the stool is maybe moving along and getting more ready to be released on a normal basis. I don't think acacia causes smelly gas. When I have a couple days of smelly gas I know I am backed up and I usually drink a lot more and possibly take a Phillips chew.

Beth- I still get gas occasionally and I have been on Acacia for a year now. I think Tamara is right. If it is really smelly then it means you have old stool in there. When I have more gas it us usually when I haven't gone in a day. I only take Acacia at night usually 1 tablespoon. I know it is better to take it througout the day but i honestly can't remember to do so. That could be a cause of why I have so much gas in the am time when I first get up!!

I had a big ole BM yesterday morning and yet, had the worst smelly gas all day long. So, I couldn't have had stool still in me...I mean it was a load!
This confuses me, since I have the smelly gas even when my colon empties out.

...if I stop now, I'll have wasted 5 weeks of increasing it and will have to start all over again.
What kind of pills do you take? And how much? You're a C, right?

Sounds like you think I should continue increasing the Acacia, right? Did you have problems with gas when you took it? What is your maintainance dose? I just don't know if gas is just part of living with IBS or if it would get better by stopping the Acacia. I never had it like this before Acacia! But, the stools are getting more regular!
How much do you drink per day, approximately?

Beth, I get a lot gas too, especially when I don't go enough, like the last few days. If the BM's are getting better that's really good! It's got to be making you feel better if you're evacuating the stool. The gas may be embarrassing at work, but that's not nearly as bad as not having good BM's or BM's at all. I'd put up with a ton of gas if I could have good BM's regularly. Stick with the acacia, you're probably getting better! -Bob

that is my opinion. I think your problems are what I call a poop deficit and by getting smooth and regular you will end the cramps and bloat and pain. I take 2T a day. I keep the acacia in a glass container with seal top and put a tablespoon in there and put 1T in with the malto meal and 1T in with my evening tea. I drink 100oz a day most of the time. I am in a poop deficit right now too because of having the D last week and three days of C and been wanting to go throughout the day but can't. Anyway I think increasing acacia is worth a try. I just feel that since you already feel crummy you should go ahead and try it!

Well it might not be true but I have found it to be the case most of the time. Unless a specific food causes it which happens sometimes but usually you know what the culprit was. Right now I have the stinky gas (see post below as to why) and yet I go everyday. But I haven't gone as much as I should have for a week so there is a backup. Yet I don't know everything!

Beth when Oprah had her show on with the GI doctor he said that a healthy person should pass gas at least 12-14 times a day! I couldn't believe it but that is what he said. So I guess that makes us normal huh?? LOL

It could be a transition phase or it could be coincidence. Either way, as your BMs are getting better I think it's worth a try! And btw, IMHO 5 weeks is not a long time at all in terms of SFSs. When I first went on a SFS it took about a month of a good dose to feel benefits.
Hey, do you take a probiotic? I just remembered that one difference btn Acacia and other SFSs is the prebiotic effect...maybe it's helping stabilise your bacteria levels?

have gas now....or how long it lasted if it was only during the increasing phase.
I do take a probiotic.
I think I may need to increase again as the BMs have stopped, yet once again.

I think I'll be gassy for life no matter what. I can eat pretty much as I like, the bloat is better...not entirely gone....and the pain is gone. But GAS? ALWAYS....all day and the smell depends on what I ate....I don't blame my Gas on anything but the stupid IBS.
And my tummy has been really mad at me all weekend anyway, so now is not a good time to be answering this. But I am always gassy! Never has stopped!

Maybe I'll just be gassy all the time, no matter what I eat or take. I'd rather have gas than constipation....so I need to keep increasing the SFS because I'm still not going everyday!
If the Acacia takes the pain, bloat, and C to a lesser degree, I can be a happier person!
Thanks Kim!

hey beth-- i had gas before i started on the acacia--i have gas when im using acacia--and if i forget to take it for one day--or if im out of synch with my psyllium, i have WAY MORE GAS THEN I KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH! true for me that my gas never seems to subside, i figure its always going to be like that. how often do you wait to eat? theres times that i go a long time without eating mainly b/c i cant. sad huh? it sucks b/c my stomach is always hurting and growling so bad. i noticed that on days like that, when i finally do eat, i always get really bloated. are you getting enough water? cliche--but if youre taking SFS and not getting enough water--you get really bad gas b/c youre not hydrated enough to push out the poop on deck in your colon. sorry too much info-- but its totally true! i had gas all day today b/c i didnt take psyllium last night b/c i ran out so until tomorrow ill feel almost like i can poop, but nothing but gas will come out. ibs sucks doesnt it? *HUG*

How much Acacia do you take? And I'm surprised that the psyllium helps your gas....I thought psyllium increased gas.

For me the gas is the last symptom to go away. It also comes back rapidly if I eat anything bad, such as dairy or chinese takeout.
Also, it has always been my understanding that gas is caused by the bacteria in our systems, not old feces. I'm guessing that by providing the sulfur-producing bacteria a food source they like (eg, dairy), they begin to thrive and thus produce the gas.
BTW, when I don't take acacia regularly it does wonders for the constipation. Even if I haven't taken it in a week or two, I'll take 2T in one day, with no negative side effects. I actually prefer to not take it on a regular basis.
