Hello friends,
I have visited this website many times and finally I was able to purchase the book, Eating For IBS. I can truly say that more recently I have been starting to feel better.
I only have one question at this point?? Is peanut butter allowed???? I wish I could find a list of things in the United States that I could eat, the book offers alot of recipes but I have never been a lover of Vietnamese, Cajun, Chinese, or other really ethnic foods. Is that a more down to earth diet that is more american?
Peace and calm to all, Lummibeader

You can check out the IBS Recipes Board. You'll find all kinds of "normal" recipes there and there's even a recent thread on peanut butter.
HTH. Welcome to the Boards.

I do okay with some reduced fat smooth peanunt butter now and then, but only if I am stable. Crunchy just rips up my gut anymore.
As for recipes, I second the recipe board. You may also find you can alter some of your regular recipes so that they are IBS-friendly.
Also, for things like instant mashed potatoes or Bisquick (reduced fat), use soy milk (or rice milk) in place of cow's milk. It works great and you can't taste the difference.

I am also a more plain gal -- and I do love my peanut butter. I just watch how much I use -- and I do use the reduced fat creamy kind. I watch how much fat is in the whole meal too -(and the rest of the day even)- not just the peanut butter. Have it not on an empty tummy... all those kinds of things. Then it comes down to personal tolerances.
I 2nd the recipe board as well. I also do those simple substitutions -- soy milk, soy burgers, egg whites for whole eggs,... that kind of thing.

As a general rule, nuts are difficult for IBS people to tolerate. However, they are safer in a pureed form (like peanut butter) than in a whole form.
Unfortunately, though, I can't tolerate peanut butter or any other kind of nut butter. I get IBS pain from it.
If you do want to try peanut butter, I recommend you go to a health food store that has a machine to grind down and make the peanut butter for you. It is better to eat the peanut butter without any added ingredients such as what is found in Skippy's and other brand peanut butters sold in supermarkets. Often these brands have added fats in them, making them even more difficult to tolerate.

i'd actually go for reduced fat pb, from the supermarket. i think that'll be lower in fat than natural peanut butter, which is pure peanuts. at least for me, the troubling part of peanut butter is the high fat content. i find that in a low-fat day, in a low-fat meal, i can handle some with a banana, in a sandwich, or on a bagel. just be very sparing.

from the -ose ending, i'd guess it's another of those pesky sweetners, or maybe related to lactose? but it also sounds like something out of science fiction, so i figured i ought to ask.

For information on Galactose please see: www/galactosemia.com/generalinfo.html I was incorrect re: peanuts containing galactose. Sorry for posting an error.
This site/page is quite interesting, though and provides some lists re: foods and their galactose content.

still a little confused. it says legumes have galactose, so i know this isn't the same thing as lactose intolerance, but the site didn't seem to explain everything, unless i'm having a spacey night and just can't find it.

Try http://www.answers.com/topic/galactose
Galactose n.
"A monosaccaharide, C6 H12 O6, commononly occuring in certain pectins, gums, and mucilages."
Basically, it's a form of sugar that some individuals lack the enzymes to digest. It is lactose intolerance, but more than just dairy foods.

I love peanut butter. The regular kind that I feed my kids(they refuse to eat the organic) has way too much fat in it to tolerate. I find that I can tolerate the organic kind. I like the Wild Oats brand but any natural peanut butter - check the ingrediants. If it has anything other than peanuts and salt forget it - will do fine. Just don't over do it. A tbsp smeared on white bread will probably be OK. I eat that for lunch 3 times a week at least.
Oh. Just so you know... When you open the peanut butter it needs to be stirred because the oil rises to the top. Also you have to keep it in the fridge.

thank you, kate. i don't know why this is so hard for me to get here, but i'm still a little confused (but much less so). and to think i took AP chemistry back in the day.
i understand that lactose intolerance is when your body can't digest lactose, can't break it down into glucose and galactose. what i don't see yet is how galactose on its own a problem.

Often people born with lactose intolerance have a huge problem metabolizing galactose. They are born without the 'enzymes' to metabolize lactose/galactose. I'm one of them. For foods with galactose, I require galactose enzyme pills.

Hi Kate,
Thank you for responding to my question. I guess I did not mention that I grew up with a normal digestive life. I grew up on hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, pizza, etc. I could eat anything, the spicer the better, the cheesier the better. Then suddenly in 1998, for no reason that could be found I got very ill and could not even drink water. I lost nearly 100 pounds with in the first year and have been constantly battling trying to gain weight. I am now 54 and size 8. I love being so tiny but really I would have liked it a little earlier in my life, like when I was single over 30 years ago. Ha Ha Ha So I have just since 1998, become fanatical about food. I do not particularly enjoy having a constant obsession with eating, digesting, etc.
So I have had some Jif creamy peanut butter in small amounts and it does not seem to cause any discomfort or problems. I am not a doctor and know nothing about nutrition and now I can not even figure out what I could eat to ease the discomfort and pain of diaherra or constipation.
So I am glad that I have this place to talk about all this, cause hubby does not really want to hear it. He just says tell me what to fix for you. Like I would know???
Thanks, Lummibeader Bellingham, WA IBS-A (if that is for all, cause I have them all.) Lummi Nation Bead Artist
