Try http://www.answers.com/topic/galactose

Galactose n.

"A monosaccaharide, C6 H12 O6, commononly occuring in certain pectins, gums, and mucilages."

Basically, it's a form of sugar that some individuals lack the enzymes to digest. It is lactose intolerance, but more than just dairy foods.

I love peanut butter. The regular kind that I feed my kids(they refuse to eat the organic) has way too much fat in it to tolerate. I find that I can tolerate the organic kind. I like the Wild Oats brand but any natural peanut butter - check the ingrediants. If it has anything other than peanuts and salt forget it - will do fine. Just don't over do it. A tbsp smeared on white bread will probably be OK. I eat that for lunch 3 times a week at least.

Oh. Just so you know... When you open the peanut butter it needs to be stirred because the oil rises to the top. Also you have to keep it in the fridge.

thank you, kate. i don't know why this is so hard for me to get here, but i'm still a little confused (but much less so). and to think i took AP chemistry back in the day.

i understand that lactose intolerance is when your body can't digest lactose, can't break it down into glucose and galactose. what i don't see yet is how galactose on its own a problem.

Often people born with lactose intolerance have a huge problem metabolizing galactose. They are born without the 'enzymes' to metabolize lactose/galactose. I'm one of them. For foods with galactose, I require galactose enzyme pills.

Hi Kate,

Thank you for responding to my question. I guess I did not mention that I grew up with a normal digestive life. I grew up on hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, pizza, etc. I could eat anything, the spicer the better, the cheesier the better. Then suddenly in 1998, for no reason that could be found I got very ill and could not even drink water. I lost nearly 100 pounds with in the first year and have been constantly battling trying to gain weight. I am now 54 and size 8. I love being so tiny but really I would have liked it a little earlier in my life, like when I was single over 30 years ago. Ha Ha Ha So I have just since 1998, become fanatical about food. I do not particularly enjoy having a constant obsession with eating, digesting, etc.

So I have had some Jif creamy peanut butter in small amounts and it does not seem to cause any discomfort or problems. I am not a doctor and know nothing about nutrition and now I can not even figure out what I could eat to ease the discomfort and pain of diaherra or constipation.

So I am glad that I have this place to talk about all this, cause hubby does not really want to hear it. He just says tell me what to fix for you. Like I would know???

Thanks,
