OTC Medications...what exactly are the doing inside?

I have a question about over the counter medications, like Pepto-Bismol and Immodium.
I'm not sure if anyone can answer this or if I can be directed to where I might found out. I guess I mainly interested in the "science" of it (if there is a science that can be understood)
What exactly are they doing to "slow/control" symptoms of D?
Do they actually "heal" or rectify a problem? Or do they just "postpone" or "delay" the problem?
thanks.

Heather talks about Immodium in her book The First Year: IBS; however, this information is available on the site. Here's a quote:
"Immodium and Lomotil are the most common anti-diarrheal medications for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. They enhance intestinal water absorption, strengthen anal sphincter tone, and decrease intestinal transit, thereby increasing stool consistency and reducing frequency." The First Year: IBS (Medications)
As for PeptoBismol (which contains bismuth, a mineral), I think it lowers the secretion of fluid into the intestines and has antibacterial and antacid effects.
Neither one fixes the problem or cures diarrhea/IBS, but they can be used as preventatives and for maintenance when dealing with IBS-D. For me, I find they work best when following Heather's diet.
Unfortunately, I don't know much more than that. I hope it was of some help!
