Hello Friends,
I am a 27 year old male and was recently diagnosed with IBS after living with it for 10 years after a colonoscopy and blood work that ruled everything else out. I have been reading Ms. Van Vorous' book, The First Year: IBS. I have found that I do not suffer nearly as often as many other people. Before I was diagnosed or started adjusting my diet, I would sometimes get IBS-D every week, but there were times where I had gone 6 weeks.
My attacks are random and do not occur every time I eat the "trigger foods". I have grown to know what triggers my attacks: overindulgence, standard restaurant food, greasy/fried food, food with a very high fat content, and red meat. Due to the random nature of my attacks, I am able to eat some of this food without an attack, although I try to avoid them as much as possible. For example, this past weekend I ate a fried chicken Po'Boy from Popeye's chicken (I believe the nutritional information for the sandwich says 60% grease/40% fat) with no problem, although I had it in the back of my mind the entire time that something might happen.
Ms. Van Vorous mentions several foods to avoid: dairy, red meat, dark poultry meat, etc. I, however, am able to drink milk and eat yogurt without any problem. I have a yogurt for breakfast every morning and do not have any trouble. I also eat a lot of cold cereal and do not have problems with that either. My question is: Should I still eliminate all of the food that Ms. Van Vorous dictates or should I continue to avoid what troubles me, while incorporating soluable fiber/herbal teas into my diet, or should I completely avoid the foods that do not cause me problems, such as milk/yogurt.
Thanks,
Ben
