Other than taking a probiotic and acacia fiber(prebiotic), is there anything else I can take to reduce the flare ups of Ibs/d when I'm on antibiotics?
I have to have surgery in October, and will be given antibiotics to take. Antibiotics really make my body spasm out.
Thanks for your advice. Barbara

Be extra careful with diet and other triggers in the run-up and then only eat SF whilst on the antibiotics. Also, start taking Immodium as a preventative every day as soon as you start the antibiotic course. And take peppermint capsules and drink peppermint tea (unless you have GERDs of course) as it's a great anti-spasmodic...your doc also might be able to give you an rx antispasmodic for the duration, but you might well need to start it beforehand.
Remember to take your probiotic and your antibiotics at different times of the day as well.

my gastro recommended saccharomyces boulardii while taking antibiotics. rememeber to space out your probiotics from your antibiotics.
this website has more info. www.wholehealthmd.com just do a search and will bring up an info page.

Two things you might do...
1. Take the antibiotic with LOTS of (room temperature) water to wash it through your gut quickly. (Make sure you are allowed to drink water with it.)
2. See if you would be allowed to take penicillin as your antibiotic. If so, inquire about getting the penicillin injected as opposed to taking it orally (or find out if there is some other non-oral way to take penicillin or another antibiotic). I opted for penicillin injections when I had wisdom tooth surgery 15 years ago. (I had to first undergo allergy testing to ensure I wasn't allergic to penicillin because I wasn't sure if I was.)
However, be warned: penicillin injections are VERY PAINFUL -- not just during the injection, but for at least a day or two afterwards because it is injected right into a muscle in your arm or leg. (I would recommend leg.)
Despite the misery caused by the penicillin injections, I found them to be far more tolerable than the IBS misery I would have endured if I had taken the penicillin orally.

Thanks to everyone for the good information. I never knew that you should take antibiotics at a separate time from probiotics. I'll definitely do that in the future.
I will also step up the peppermint caps from 1 to 3.

Barbara
