Hi BarbaraS , well the first thing to make sure is he doesn't have c and an obstrution, but since he does have bowel movements, that's a good thing.
Here is some C info.
Comprehensive Overview of Constipation:

Here is some Miralax info. for you.

I am with Heather on fiber for kids, fiber is healthy in general anyways.
There are tons of children with IBS or other functional disorders.
This doctor doesn't seem to know much, so I would find a different one for this, I think.
Good luck and let me know if I can help some more.
I highly recommend some relaxation techniques for the pain, pain is also tied into emotions. This can be very important for a lot of reasons, including ways to cope with it and not tighten up the muscles when in pain.

Also if he is c, then excersise is important also for good gut function.
I think adding small amounts of fiber is worth a try as well.
He might also benefit from something like equalactin perhaps. Papaya enzymes might help also as well as the peppermint. Small meals should make them less hard to digest also and watch he is not wearing tight cloths as well. Also that he is getting enough water and also it may help to give him something like chicken broth to rehydrate, because water will not totally rehydrate a person, but the broth has important electrolytes in it.
Hope this helps some for you and your child.

Yes, it is the same doctor who told me not to give him fiber supplements, so instead he prescribed Mirlax as a solution. I only gave that to him for a month - just dont' see this as a long term solution. You two have convinced me to switch doctors and will try do that tomorrow instead of waiting until the first of the year. Poor kid had some tummy pain today (not too bad) and than a bee stung him on the eyelid. Thank goodness he isn't allergic to bees.

He does get a lot of excercise, especially being one of three boys. He is involved in Tae Kwon Doe and will be starting Basketball soon. We do eat a lot of fresh veggies in our house and one of our favorite breakfast is oatmeal and oatbran. He does get a lot of daily fiber in his diet. Thanks a bunch for all the info. you have given me.
