Hi there all.

I have made an appointment to see my new Dr about my IBS (diagnosed by my old doctor after examination and blood tests, also told me a good way of regulating my weight Stupid man!)

Anyway, this may seem a slightly silly question but what should I expect of my Dr?

Have any of you discussed Heathers diet with your Dr? and what did they think?

Many thanks!

Not a silly question at all! I actually just did this myself not too long ago, as I switched doctors after I moved.

Basically, what I did was explain my previous doctor's diagnosis, including any tests I had, the symptoms I had before and any I still had, and anything else significant about my medical history (I have gallbladder problems as well)... and I just let him do the rest. As it turns out, he's suggesting more tests on the gallbladder, just to be sure.

I did explain the diet to him too, and like most doctors, I don't think he knows enough about eating for specific health problems to really have much to say about it... but he said that if it's working, to keep it up, because it sounded like a wonderfully healthy diet to him.

Good luck!

Write down a list of your symptoms (mine are severe cramps, painful gas and explosive D), and your triggers (mine are heat, over eating, pressure on the stomach, jostling, bad food choices like dairy or IF, and stress!). I always forget some important question I want to ask, and writing things down really helps.

Also it shows your doc that you are knowledgable about your condition, and are being proactive about your recovery and quality of life!

Good luck--

Here's a post I did a little while ago - it's got links to a couple of pages in this Website that you may find helpful.

My GI guy thinks lots of soluble fiber is great - very happy about that. He also agrees that alcohol and caffeine are GI irritants, although he didn't go so far as to say I should give them up (I have a sneaking suspicion that that's because he wouldn't be willing to). Giving up red meat he's also sort of wishy-washy about - he doesn't think it's a bad idea, just not convinced it's necessary. (I am, by the way - I think that may have helped me more than any other one aspect of the diet.)

Bottom line, though, my GI guy's attitude is that if it helps me, keep doing it. He's smart enough to know there's not much he can do for me, so if this diet works for me, he's all for it.

All my doctors are thrilled at the low-fat aspect of the diet - and the great effect it's had on my cholesterol and triglycerides.

BTW, in this quote:

Are you saying that your old doctor told you IBS was a good way to regulate your weight? Please, please tell me I've misunderstood this!

...........I went to my appointment and the new doctor was quite helpful. I have been referred to a specialist at our hospital and Im waiting for an appointment now.

I have also been given tablets called Mebeverine Hydrochloride. To be taken 3x a day, one before each meal. Has any one else heard of or taken these? I am going to research them further before I start taken them.

And Sand, Yes! The man told me IBS was a good way to regulate weight!!!!! Obviously has no idea about how IBS feel!

Thanks again!

What a horrible - and stupid - thing to say! Never mind how bad IBS feels - I've had it for 4 years and I can assure you I haven't lost a pound because of it!

I'm so glad your new doctor seems more helpful - and more sensible!

PS - I haven't taken Mebeverine, but I'm pretty sure I've seen a reference to it on the Board. You might try a Search.
