Hi, Lisa! I just wanted to second what Cyndy said, and add that, unfortunately, not even decaf is recommended in the IBS diet. Here's a link to Heather's explanation on why coffee hurts IBSers (under IBS faqs on the site or you can check out her book): Coffee, decaf coffee, and IBS. HTH!

Here's a list of Heather's trigger foods that you must stay away from in order to try and become stable. trigger foods Note what she says on coffee: both regular AND decaf contain an enzyme that's an extremely powerful GI tract irritant. Go cold turkey today and drink herbal teas instead.

I highly recommend you check out the links to your left on IBS diet and recipes. The diet section explains everything.

lots of people subsitute coffee with Teeccino which supposedly is a good tasting and definitely is safe. You can get it in a HFS or Whole Foods or Wild Oats.

most people I have heard here just make sure to have a few to several bites of soluble then mix in the insoluble. Of course this will depend on a person's tolerance. Personally I don't think worrying about a certain amount of soluble in your tummy is necessary- it all gets mixed up in there anyway. So as long as there is enough soluble to be a good, safe base it is ok. Anyway a few bites of rice or pasta or whatever should do it.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
