Have any of you experienced terrible nervousness and insomnia while following the IBS diet? My diarrhea got better in two days but I am a wreck otherwise. WS Wspencer815@cs.com

Are you drinking enough water? When you say you're following the diet...what are you eating exactly? Are you getting a lot of sugar/additives? Please let us know what you're eating so we can see if nutrition is a factor!

Thank you for your reply. I ate the things listed: white rice, white bread, pasta, oatmeal and potato. No I have not been having sugar (though i want it!!!!) I was up all last night - not one second sleep. It is really terrible. Do you think the diet is too heavy? It sure stopped my diarrhea. WS Wspencer815@cs.com

I have experienced this, but it's usually some medicine (or caffeine) that does that to me. Most medicines that make people sleepy, such as Benadryl and Tylenol PM, make me sky high! Sudafed makes me feel crazy. All allergy medicines keep me up at night. I can't even have more than one Diet Coke a day without staying up at night. Even decaf drinks give me insomnia.

Hi - Two days of just soluble fiber foods shouldn't cause anxiety or insomnia. If you used to drink coffee or soda pop you could be going through caffeine withdrawal.
Are you drinking LOTS of water? Deydration is really common and can cause those symptoms. You need at least 16 eight ounce glasses of water a day, especially with all that soluble fiber. And, since your diarrhea is under control (which is great!) you can start carefully expanding your diet and adding smoothies (blend fresh fruit with soy or rice milk until liquid) and cooking/pureeing fresh veggies into blended soups with rice or into pasta sauces. Add a bit of grilled skinless chicken breast or fish as well.
Just the soluble fiber foods aren't "heavy" at all - that would be things like animal proteins and fats. And actually, high carb foods often prompt sleepiness more than insomnia.
Have you added or adjusted any medications lately?

Thanks for the reply. No, I use no caffine. But they have had me on and off of hormone replacement. I think that has upset my nervous system terribly. I am going to see a gynoc. this afternoon to ask. WS
