How many of you have anxiety or depression or other psychological issues? I am really curious about the connection because I am experiencing these emotions more than ever in my life and I am also experiencing IBS more than ever before in my life! What do ya'll think?

Most people who suffer from IBS are "high strung" or anxious type people. Not all but most. I'm the same, I started getting IBS symptoms, got stressed about them, got worse, worried about all sorts of things like eating in public, public toilets, got worse IBS symtoms, worried about more stuff etc, etc and finally I have now found out that I have developed depression and today discovered I have an eating disorder, so yes, IBS is very much affected by our emotions etc and they are affected by our IBS. Hope this helps.

I was speaking to my GI Dr the other day, and he said, stress (or whatever your problem might be) doesn't *make* you have IBS, but if you have it, or the tendency for it, problems will make IBS worse..

But I don't think psy issues cause IBS, they may keep it going or worsen it, but they are not one developes it.

they can make it much worse, even if you were calm 100% of the time you would still experience symptoms sometimes, stress, anxiety and worry can just make things worse that's all. Eg If I'm under a lot of pressure over something and am stressed I can guarantee that I will get an attack of pain and major diarreah.

good answer doubletrouble..

and I don't think she's trying to say everyone with ibs is highstrung.. she's just illustrating the connection.

Anyways.. I know in my own case, I'm a chill person, and just roll with almost everything. However, because of this I don't stress over attacks too much.. I just run the the nearest bathroom if i'm out.. go.. and then go on with my shopping or my day.

Stress really isn't a trigger for me, and beause I'm not anxious or high strung thats not a trigger either.

BUT there are alot of people for who are totally different from me.
