I do fine eating (peeled) apples, as per the IBS diet, and often have several in a day with no problem. My question is as follows: Pink Lady apples, (which are delicious), in particular, used to give me tremendous problems (cramping, bloating, stomach all twisted in a knot for hours, then constipation and flatulence) before I knew about the importance of peeling and seeding. I'm scared to try them again but would love to as they are particularly sweet and flavorful, presumably from a higher fructose content. Does anyone know if specific types of apples cause problems, even if they are peeled, or should I be ok? I seem to do fine with Braeburns and Galas. Thanks!

Well, baked or stewed is actually the safest way to eat your peeled apples! Even though most of the IF in apples is in the peel, there is still some IF in the flesh of the fruit.

I don't know the answer to your question other than I can't eat raw apples. I have to peel, seed and cook apples (or eat babyfood apple sauce) in order to tolerate 'em. However, if you want to be daring and try a "red delicious apple," I hear that particular variety helps prevents cancer and I always use them when I bake apple cake.

I suppose that if the Pink Lady has a higher fructose content, it might be more troublesome.
Maybe you could eat a good bit of SF as a cushion, then try eating a little peeled Pink Lady apple baked or stewed to begin with. If you tolerate that, try eating a little bit raw (peeled, of course, and after SF).

Granny Smiths have always killed me. Golden Delicious or Gala I have always found easiest to tolerate.

Does it really matter what type of apple is eaten? Are'nt they all the same?
I thought the granny smith apple would be the most tolerated since it is the lowest in sugar and, thus, probably the lowest in fructose and natural sorbitol amounts.

They are the most acidic tho! I can't eat them either but can have very sweet pears just fine. So it's all VERY personal.

I thought I was making the wisest decision. Never heard about the acidic factor. I have a whole bag of granny smith in my fridge right now. It is a shame how much food I have had to "dump" because of this IBS!
I have a baked granny smith waiting for me for my snack today! Don't have any other food to substitute for it, so not sure what to do for today!
Does anyone have a recommendation for the best tolerable type of apple?
Thanks

But I tend to get Bramley Apples for baking...they're so yummy! Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've EVER baked a Granny Smith - Just didn't occur to me!

...not actually sure. It seems to make my apples taste sweeter (and less acidic) but maybe that's just me.

I used to love those - for about five minutes - until I would double over - do you think they would be OK peeled?
