...what do you take on a daily basis (besides SFS)?
I take Zelnorm, peppermint capsules, a probiotic and a stool softener (Phillip's Laxative Dietary Supplement) but I'm looking for some ideas.
Thanks! Elizabeth

I've been having chronic C for about a month or more now and I just don't know what else to do. I've tried Citrucel but it doesn't work and I tried taking Equalactin (2 tablets, 4x a day) and it worked for awhile but not anymore. For the past month or so I've been taking Ex-Lax on and off but I hate having to take it because I don't want to get dependent on it. Any tips or advice on what to take would be greatly appriciated. My lower stomach/abdomen is so bloated and hard I can't stand it anymore! I'm going to see an IBS specialist April 19th (soonest she could get me in). I've also been taking for about 3 weeks, VSL3, a probiotic preparation of live freeze-dried lactic acid bacteria. This was recomended to me by a family friend/RD (whose also a Fellow of the Amer. Dietetic Assoc.) and he's had IBS for over 20 years and said this has worked the best for him. I've been taking one packet every 3 days but the directions say to experiment with dosage and I don't know if I should take more or less? Here's the link to the site: www.vsl3.com Thanks for ANYTHING! I'm so desperate

Acacia (SFS) 3tbs/day 8 glasses of water/day excercise 5 days/week
You should NOT be taking exlax on a regular basis. It is extremely bad for you and will end up causing you more problems in the long run. My doctor told me that it's so bad for your system they shouldn't even be allowed to sell it. I think you can get stool softners that don't create dependancy and are a lot easier on your system.

I thought calcium could make C worse? I must be wrong.
How many mg of both the cal/mag and the mag malate do you take?
Thanks so much!

What is the Omega 3:6:9?
Are the digestive enzymes the papaya kind? What brand are they?
Thanks so much! Elizabeth

Calcium CAn make C worse. If taken with magnesium tho it helps. How much mag. you need i very individual. I have fibro so I take 2,500 mg cal and 1,250 mag with the combined stuff. Then at night I take mag malate which has 200mg mag and 1,100mg malate. THIS is what helps me go so smoothly.
In the beginning I took the mag malate all day and I got D. So I had to test out the water and find what works for me.
HTH....hope you go soon!

I've been browsing over posts and see a lot about this Acacia. What is it exactly? I've stopped the laxatives because I'm extremly worried about screwing myself up for good. Where do I get this Acacia and should I talk to my doctor before starting it? I have the other stuff down pat though. I drink over 100oz of water a day and do 50-60min of cardio 5x a week, and sometimes on weekends if I'm feeling lazy Thanks for everything! Do you know of certain stool softners I should try? I'm kind of clueless about them

Acacia is a soluble fiber supplement similar to Metamucil or Benefiber. It's currently only sold here by Heather through her website. It's important to take a fiber supplement whether it's acacia or something else. You can certainly check with your doctor first but it's basically a food not a medicine.
Good luck! And keep coming back, okay?!

Ya'll are so nice and helpful!!! I've been taking Equalactin (500mg polycarbophil), do you know if this is the same as Benefiber? And is Metamucil different than Citrucel? My dad takes Metamucil for regularity (don't know if it's C or D...I don't ask LOL) and I've tried Citrucel and it doesn't work Thanks so much again!

Do you take the cal/mag in one tablet or separate tablets? Do you take 250mg of the calcium or the magnesium? Do you have a brand that you could recommend?
Thanks!

I take a combination of 500mg cal/250 mag. I take Nature's Bounty Chelated mineral form so I don't throw it up. I split the pills so wind up 250mg cal/ 125/mag x 3 day. The calcium really helps me sleep so much better, and the mag helps move things along! I have to have chelated minerals though, and water is key. Hope this helps.

Source Natural Essential Enzymes have a broad combination of enzymes. I'm not sure if the papain is in there or not.
The Omega 3:6:9 is a combination of organic flax oil, borage oil and fish oil. I take one capsule with lunch and one with dinner. A lot of mention here about flax oil helping C, and the lady at the health food store said you get the greatest benefit from a combiation of oils. The ones I'm taking now are NOW brand.

I agree, e-lax is not a good idea on a regular basis. If all else has falled you ask your dr about Miralax. Its a prescription laxative, but its an osmatic laxative, it works by pulling water into the colon unlike the e-lax which is a harsh stimulate laxative. Its still possible to become dependant on miralax but I've taked it four 4 years and it still works great!

SFS (soluble fiber supplements) such as benefiber, equalactin, citrucel, fiber-con or acacia (I'm sure I missed a couple but those are the main ones) all basically do the same thing, they stabilize the gut. Certain brands do seem to work better for certain people so feel free to try different brands to see what works best. Typically the powders contain more fiber per dose than the pills do.
I've been IBS C for about 19 years now. I got to the point where I was taking over the counter laxative 4-5 times a week. Finally my dr prescribed me miralax. I've been on it for about 4 years and it still works great for me. Your colon still may become dependant on it but its an osmotic laxative and doesn't use harsh stimulants. I mix a spoon of Acacia in with my Miralax every morning!
Stool softners are all pretty much the same, peri-colace. You can take them on a regular basis without problems, unlike regular over the counter laxatives.

Right now I've been taking somewhere around 2000mg a day. Any less and I can't go... but I also should try some stool softeners since that is essentially what the magnesium does for me anyway.

I drink a capful of Miralax every morning in a large glass of water/cranberry juice. For the past couple weeks I've also put about 1 1/2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed on my cereal or in my oatmeal every morning. Wow. I have never gone to the bathroom so well!
I think this combination of Miralax & flaxseed is really helping me.
I will say, though, that I tried eating Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal a couple days & got VERY C, even taking the above supplements. I learned to stay away from that cereal.

Well right after I got off of here yesterday my dietitian (family friend) called to check up on how I was doing with the IBS. I explained everything to him and he gave me some good tips and I'm also now taking 1 heaping TB of Psyllium husk fiber (same thing as Metamucil, just Target brand) and I drank it last night before bed....and I'm going today! I'm so freakin' excited! LOL I'm still extremely bloated and not empited out, but I can tell at least it's working! I never thought I'd get this excited about BMs

Hi Beth! To be honest, I did not notice much improvement with them and I have not noticed much change without them. I don't know if that has to with the brand or what, they were Rainbow Light.

For my SFS I take Metamucil twice a day. I also just started Fiber Choice...wish me luck!
Aside from that, I only take the store brand Colace everyday. I hope the Fiber Choice helps, if not then perhaps I will start up the magnesium again. *reading the thread for ideas*
What's the difference between the types of magnesium?

because the Phillip's Laxative Dietary Supplement that I take only lists the 500mg of Magnesium as "magnesium." Some people take magnesium malate, but that's just a blend of magnesium and malate and I'm not sure what the malate does. It still doesn't tell me what kind of magnesium is in the magnesium malate. :/

...is a source of magnesium and malic acid (which people with Fibromyalgia often also need a supplement of).
The different forms are just the different forms of molecules containing magnesium.
