Once anyone is pretty stable and then they cheat a bit, does the pain (gas)come back as quickly?
I am trying to stabilze but I do seem to cheat once in a while!

For me it's more that I get less symptoms from the cheat food than I did before I stabilised, eg. a bit of gas instead of major cramps and D. Cheating before you are stable will really slow the stabilising process down.

I was way too scared to cheat til I was stable! But recently I have cheated a lot and different types of isolated cheating has given different results. Keep it rare and stick to my cheating "rules" and you hopefully will be OK, it has worked for me. I haven't gotten the "doubled over" abdominal pain that I had constantly before I stabilised since. Note that I have only had red meat once when I couldn't get out of it (friend made dinner and all choices were incredibly unsafe) and it did bring on some D and cramping..
My cheating "rules" are as follows;
1. NEVER cheat on an empty stomach
2. Don't overdo the cheat eg a steak with fries and cheese sauce! Have a piece of steak or some fries with your normal safe meal.
3. beware alcohol cheating- this is my most frequent cheat and I only do it when it is sooo worth it...it WILL give you C/D and stomach ache if you overdo it and with some drinks even if you only have half a glass (beer is bad )
4. Each cheat will have side effects- like wind, urgency etc so be prepared for whatever it is.
5. Don't cheat constantly or you will destabilise
6 ONLY CHEAT IF YOU ARE STABLE

The funny thing is I kinda follow the same guidlines. As a matter of fact, I'm going out Thurs night for St. Patty's and I've scheduled Friday as a feel-like-crap day to recover. (rule 4)

But Heather mentions this in her writings so I never considered not doing it. I will have 1T. of cheese or 2 bites of dessert or 2 bites of steak and that sort of thing. But on a full stomach and with a LOW FAT meal and not too often either.

-------------------- IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

Sinead these are great!
However (for 9804 and others hwo are not stabilized ) keep in mind that these should be for AFTER you're stabilized - as Linz said, cheating now will throw all your hard work out the window. Stay strong until you're stabilized (or, most likely, you won't GET stabilized) then allow yourself a little cheating here and there.

But for some people it takes longer, either b/c their triggers are complex or their responses are hard to pin down (a big problem for Cers). Or b/c in some people there is another problem (like a food intolerance) that is causing extra problems.

I have edited my rules as I wasn't clear enough that you should ONLY CHEAT WHEN STABLE. I had it in my intro paragraph but per what Linz and Laurel said I have added it as a sixth rule, in red ink.

I will be cheating tonight, and not with a beer. Or even a glass of wine, which I've cheated with before without an attack.
However, tonight's celebration calls for a margarita or maybe I'll try a martini instead (never had one).
Anyone have any...I don't know...tips for mixed drinks that won't be horrific? Any additional tips for cheating?

i find that the easiest drinks to tolerate are clear (or close to) and low-sugar. (of course, avoid dairy drinks like white russians, and if carbonation is hard on you, take that into account.) so i avoid, for example, amaretto sours ( ) and beer, but am okay with a glass or two of white wine, or a vodka tonic/vodka & cranberry. vodka's generally the safest hard liquor. so a martini without a lot of sugary liquers should be pretty okay - but it'll also be really strong, so make sure you make all other circumstances (like drinking it on a stomach full of safe, low-fat, high-SF food) in your favor.

It's not worth it. Don't cheat. Truly. Stick with the program until you really ARE stable. Once you have that Big Mac for the first time, and it goes down just fine, you have a pretty good idea you're "good to go." But that takes a LONG time to get there. Don't rush it.
No, there was no pain, no gas, after my first dead cow carcass, not even after my first cuppa coffee or my first salad. None whatsoever. However, I had a little trouble after my first real ice cream. Dairy, in large amounts, is still a problem for me.
9804, it's just soooooo important to get better, it's not worth the cheating. I know, because I used to cheat with coffee, and it wasn't until I gave up that coffee that I began to "heal."

Trust me, the end of that project at work was worth cheating! Two years working on a DVD was worth the strawberry margarita and a little bit of cheese and 2 stuffed mushrooms. Now I just have to implement it...Heh, training some of my volunteers may make me want anothe drink!
So far, no attack, but I am going to be careful today.
Dead cow now scares me. I had the LOVELIEST attack in 2004 after some beef & brocolli. I dont' think I've had a bite of beef since. Though I am much, much, much, MUCH more stable now, I haven't been the same since and it took following the diet the better part of a year to get to this point.
I can't do lots of dairy, either. At the very least, it makes me stinky!
However, I am at the point where I know my limits.

mmm we have similar taste in drinks. For some reason cocktails bother me a lot less than more normal drinks like beer etc. I drank sooo many strawberry daiquiris on holiday and they didn't affect me.
Of course I NEVER drank on an empty stomach (if I do it's enough to send me to the ER with cramps) and tried to eat very safely that whole day. I get cramps when I drink too much but this is more hangover than anything.
You're right to be careful today. mmm margarita...mmmm

Hi Bevrs, I've had almost exactly the same reaction as you. However, I haven't even tried ice cream. That bothered me before I even got the bad IBS a year ago. There's something characteristically different about ice cream and most other dairy. Unfortunately, I don't know what it is though. -Bob

I agree about ice cream, Bob. I cheat on other things like chocolate sometimes, but I don't know that I'll ever eat ice cream again. I remember being stuck on the toilet after eating ice cream when I was in elementary school, even though I didn't get bad IBS until after college... that's how long it's bothered me. I guess it's just waaay too much dairy. I know alfredo sauce is the same way for me. I guess those are the things we need to give up for good.

Maybe they're just too much of a good thing - dairy + high fat + egg yolks. Sort of an IBS trifecta.
That's probably why they both taste so darn good, too. (Sigh.) Which brings up the other problem with these two foods, at least for me - it's almost impossible to eat just a little tiny bit.

I can tolerate most mixed drinks with no problems at all: my favorite though is a bay breeze with Malibu Rum. I thought the pineapple and cranberry juice would give me problems, but I was fine. So on girls night out (like 3-4 times a week ) I know I am fine with that drink!!!!

It varies. The worse your IBS is the longer it will take. Personally I have had IBS for years and haven't be able to get stable. It's sure frustrating!

IBS for years and never stable after a year of doing this diet. I keep hoping one day...but that may never come for some of us more severe cases.
At least I know I'm not alone now. Unfortunately for you, though! Are you following this diet?

I stabilised in about three months but didn't cheat for another three. It varies, and depends on sticking to the diet very well, but also getting to know your own body and listening to what it's telling you.

I just tried Soyfee tonight for the first time and I wouldn't say I "loved" it but I could definitely get used to it as a replacement for my morning cup (just will have to get through caf. withdrawal.) I use coffeemate creamer which reports to be lactose free but has some traces of this and that in it that don't necessarily sound IBS-safe. Does anyone use this? I am really trying to make the substitutions but it's a struggle to have the will power. I can handle the soy milk in my oatmeal but not in cold cereal and I'm sure I'll hate it in the soyfee ( I used to put light cream in my coffee!!! no wonder I had so many flare ups) Anyhow, any info is appreciated.

The soy fee coffee wasn't bad at all, but it made me hyper and feel like a witch, but that is me maybe it didn't mix with my other meds. I am using the coffee creamer with great success, try it ..

I don't drink Soyfee, I drink Teeccino, but I use Silk soy creamer in it. They have different flavors. I use the plain. I like it! It's a lot like regular half & half. HTH.

Mind you, I'm using the powdered version, and I've had no problems with it... I've never tried the liquid, and so I can't vouch for that one. However, I've never had any problems with trace amounts of dairy derivatives - if you're especially sensitive to those things, you will have to find alternatives. From what I understand, the Silk one is pretty good. I've never been able to try it - they don't sell it up here.

Welll... in my case, yes. For lunch yesterday, I ate some pulled pork with sauce from the hot BBQ bar at Whole Foods. I took my SF with lunch as I have been doing for several weeks now. I started cramping pretty badly about 3 hours later, but I took an Immodium, which soothed the cramps. I never did get D, thankfully, I attribute that to the SF. I won't be tempted to do that again for a long, long while. The smell of BBQ is hard to resist. But now I know that next time I should just say no.
