Lately I have been wondering a lot about celiac and wheat allergies. Its seems like if I eat anymore bread products other then my 2 peices of toast in the morning I dont feel good. Ive tried different brands of bread, bagels, english muffins, etc. and it seems like they always cause problems along with saltine crackers, grahm crackers and many cereals. I have had the celiac blood test done and it came back as negative. Although one of the levels was extremely high and one was about normal so the doc said that maybe I could be carrying the antibodies for it but not actually have it. If that makes any sense! Anyways is there anymore tests I could get to test this sort of thing? How do they test for food allergies? I want to set up an appointment with a new GI so I want to ask for specific tests. Thanks!

Hi Abby! If they suspect you have it (or you can probably ask) they'll give you a gastoscopy where they stick a tube down your throat (under anasthetic of course) and check the little hairs in you oesophegus (sp?). If they're lying flat then you have it but if they're all standing up you don't. I don't know if you smoke or not but you have to stop before the test cause this also makes the hairs lie flat. It's not painful at all and really no big deal. I've had it done and they're doing it again in a week. If you want to know anything else about it feel free to ask.
I also wanted to reply to your post in the living room but I'll do it all at once, hope you don't mind.
I can't help with counsellors, ours tend to be appointed through a government agency and I don't know how it works in the US but I can understand your feelings about being miserable all the time and how that affects you and your family. My DH and I have had many arguments over my inability to leave the house and depression. If you ever want to talk feel free to email me (it's in my profile). Good luck.

Honey, this is your body telling you something. I have had the celiac blood test done and it came back as negative. Although one of the levels was extremely high and one was about normal so the doc said that maybe I could be carrying the antibodies for it but not actually have it. If that makes any sense! I makes perfect sense. You may not have CD, but if the Gliadin antibodies are high you are gluten intolerant. Anyways is there anymore tests I could get to test this sort of thing? A GI may want you to have the endoscope test to test for flattened villi, but other than that you already have your answer about gluten intolerance because the blood tests are extremely sensitive and a false positive is RARE. Remember to always get copies of all your blood test results. How do they test for food allergies? Usually with an IgG ELISA test that can test over 100 different foods. I want to set up an appointment with a new GI so I want to ask for specific tests. Thanks! In the meantime the true test is to go gluten free to see how you feel. Go to any of the Celiac message boards for tips. You may be surprised to know that 70% of CD patients were first diagnosed with IBS. IBS does not kill, but CD does if gone to long undiagnosed. Thanks for the replies - I have heard about the throat test that they do so maybe I will mention that when I go in to the doctor. I will probably give the GF diet a try also but I guess I better wait until I go to the doctor first especially if they are gonna want to do tests for it.
