This is a repost--I was hoping to get a response. I could really use your help.

Hi! I'm new here and wasn't quite sure which board to post under. Anyway, I'm very close to my baby's due date (the 22nd)and I've been having major IBS cramps and constipation since December.I guess I should back-track and tell you that I was diagnosed(formally)with IBS about 2 years ago. The IBS flare-ups that started in December actually started with a bout of diarrhea and from then on, I've had a crampy/achy sensation in my back that radiates to my lower left side every few days or so(I also have a gassy/pressure sensation when I push on my abdomen,as well). The baby's fine--it's just me that's living with this achy pain all the time. I saw my gastro doc and she told me to take Bentyl as needed and it was ok'd by my OB as well. It helps some, but the aching, cramping feeling just keeps coming back and can be quite uncomfortable especially with all the false labor contractions I keep having. I try to eat high fiber foods, which helps sometimes, but not everytime. I also take Benefiber tabs, but not sure if I'm taking enough of them a day. I'm so afraid of going into labor with intestinal pain at the same time. Can you make any suggestions as to what I can do for the constipation? I seem to feel a bit better when my stools are softer and elimination is more complete.
Thank you in advance.

Danielle

You need to read the diet notes on this site, especially if by fibre you mean IF foods. These MUST be eaten safely, particularly if you're having cramps, etc on top of the C. Try strong hot fennel tea for relieving the gas and peppermint tea for cramps. Drink LOTS of water/herbal tea and try to keep moving!

Good luck!

...if you think your post is getting missed in the crush (and I found the old one so would have replied to that anyway! It just gets a bit slow round here at the w/e) just reply to your own post with the subject "bump - nt" and everyone will know you wanted to bring it to the front.

I'm not exactly sure how things are during pregnancy (YET ), but I am also a C'er. I CAN tell you that the Benefiber in pill form have sorbitol in them, which can be a trigger... if Benefiber is what works best for you, you really should be using the powder instead. Also, have you asked your OB about Mirilax? It has been proven safe during pregnancy, however, I'm not sure if it matters how far you are before beginning it. Mirilax is not a stimulant laxitive, it uses the moisture in your colon to help relieve C... you just need to be sure to drink plenty of water to help it work .

I hope you feel better soon... and good luck with your delivery! You must be getting really excited!

PS - I should probably mention that I'm currently trying to conceive and my doctor assures me that the Mirilax is quite safe.

Danielle, I can certainly sympathize with your situation. You're between well, a baby and a hard place. There's not a lot more you can do at this point. You can try drinking more water (I know! 10,000 trips to the washroom), or doing some light exercise like a 15 minute walk if you're up to it.
I suspect that the abdominal pain will go away once you go into labour. The baby will have descended far enough to help ease the cramping and well, the labour will keep you busy enough. I don't know - I'm just guessing.
I hope you feel better soon. I agree with Linz - lots of strong hot fennel tea should help.
Take care of yourself.

Hi. Sorry I must have missed this the first time round. I've had 2 pregnancies and had IBS through both although I tend to be a D rather than a C. There really isn't too much you can do other than what others have suggested, fennel tea, peppermint tea and gentle exercise and water. However the body does naturally empty out during early stages of labour and you go a couple of times so hopefully for the birth you will be empty and pain free.
