hey everyone! i had to find out the hard way that sugar free sweets can have a laxative effect if taken in "excess". i had a smallish packet of sugar free fruit drops the other day and after spent all day on the loo with REALLY bad diarrhea! did anyone else know this happened or got any horror stories?

maltitol is one kind of sweetener used in cookies and candies that can cause unpleasant side effects. fortunately i was warned ahead of time.

Yep. If you mix unsweetened chocolate with nutrasweet you get pure laxative. That's why chocolatiers never use it as an artificial sweetener. Keep that in mind if you try to sweeten hot cocoa with nutrasweet!!!!

#1 reason I stay clear of artificial sweetener.
My Father is diabetic and I made some treats for him for Christmas.... my husband ate some of the leftover melted chocolate (cleaned the bowl)... within a hour he was doubled over in pain and had cramps and really bad "D".... he does not even have IBS but will NEVER touch the stuff again!

ALL artificial sweeteners are a gastrointestinal irritant, but maltitol - the one in all the popular "low-carb" candies and bars right now - is THE WORST. I know people *without* IBS who've eaten those things and ended up in the bathroom... for us, they're killer!

If I have 2 pieces of chewy a day (extra is the worst) or 2 or 3 of those lollies I'm off to the loo! I don't even want to imagine what a whole packet would do to me! Hope you're feeling better soon.

they are really nasty.. the odd part is some of my friends who claim to have cast iron stomachs get the runs from the new low carb stuff if they eat too much.. they mention problems and we trace it back...

Hi,
I had my worst IBS attack that lasted 2 weeks before I realized that my vitamins had "mannitol" in them. I quit taking them and was fine. After reading lots of vitamin labels I found one that was OK.
Any of the "sugar-free" stuff has either sorbitol, malitol, or mannitol in them. They will cause "D" big time.....sometimes even in people that don't have IBS.
I always read the labels on anything I take and it's surprising where you will find these artificial sweetners. BTW, it's also in most gum, especially the whitening ones......so beware.
It takes a lot of time reading labels but I think it's worth it!
