I was at my health food store yesterday, and thought about purchasing some soy subs (cream cheese, regular cheese, yogurt, etc) but found that most all of them contained a derivative of casein -- as the second ingredient. Can anyone explain this to me? I thought that casein was bad for us.

Thanks!

Hey Jules,

For some folks (like me) casein ain't happenin'. For some, it's no prob what so ever. You may want to give it a try and see how you do...let me know how you make out.

Yes, this is really common. Some brands don't have casein in them - but you have to really look. A lot of folks with IBS can tolerate the small amounts of casein in soy cheeses, but some can't. You have to just try and see, unfortunately. Look for tofutti cream cheese - I think it's casein free. And you can get soy parmesan in a shaker jar that's totally dairy free. Soy yogurt should be casein free, as is soy ice cream. As for cheese slices, I haven't tried any casein free brands that were actually edible.

I was nervous about the casein too but it's no problem for me. In fact I find I quite enjoy the taste even though it's not quite up to real cheese and stuff. Good luck and God bless.
