is it ok to use small amounts of butter/margarine on bread? what could I use instead? I may use different things, including vegemite(australian food, concentrated yeast, wich has a mainly salty flavor not compatable with applesauce). any ideas/advice?

If you're in Australia you should be able to find soy margarine (coles makes a good one) which tastes pretty good.

I like Hummus on my bread! Most people tolerate jelly as well.

I usually skip the margarine or butter when I make a sandwich and just spread mustard,low-fat mayo, peanut butter or jelly or whatever on my bread. If needed I use a smidgen of Imperial margarine.
