Could I have been doing this wrong all along??? Wow! I am new here, but in a nutshell I have been dealing with IBS-C for several months - mildly off and on for several years before that.

When this new round of constipation developed, of course I tried increasing fiber in my diet since my problems started after Summer when the good fresh fruits and veggies ended! I added some Citrucel (for a couple of days) but didn't notice a big change. Then I went for the "big guns": All Bran Bran Buds. Used to work like a charm for me in the past but since I have been wheat/gluten free I didn't want to try it. Eventually I did, though, and it helped some. However, I thought I must need more, more, more fiber (INsoluble, of course.) I can't believe how many of the IBS diet guidelines I have been breaking. For the last week or so I have been eating two servings of this cereal per day spread out into three or four times per day...eating it first thing in the morning, eating it alone without any soluble fiber. I realized, too, that I really don't eat much soluble fiber...I don't eat pototoes, no wheat products, only a small amount of rice noodles maybe twice a week. Have been snacking on high fiber rice bran crackers, popcorn, grapes...anything that was high fiber. I was shocked to read that too much insoluble fiber, without the soluble fiber, could be a bad thing for constipation! I realized, too, that about the time my problems began I stopped eating the one wheat-free bread I did eat - found out it had wheat in it. There went one of the few soluble fiber parts of my diet.

I am going to try the guidelines and see what happens. I know that they might not work for me, but at least at this moment I have some hope that this might resolve! I am really hopeful and grateful for all of the info on this site.

Hi! I won't really be of much help as I'm an a but have a tendancy to lean towards d. I'm glad you found us though and hope that you are feeling a bit better soon. Soluable fibre definately helps (although I've had a few other problems and am not actually strictly on the diet at the moment)and has helped most of the people on the boards. Good luck and I'll see you around

Well you are definitely not the only one to have made that mistake! I tried for years to get back on to the healthy-but-high-in-insolubles way of eating that used to suit me fine, but now just makes me feel worse. Finding this website has helped me a lot, I hope it does the same for you. You are right, it may not happen straight away, but this is definitely the direction to go in. Remember to drink your water too, it seems to make a big difference in absorbing soluble fibre. Keep us posted how you get on!
