Has anyone had problems taking Tylenol with Codeine? Does it cause constipation or flare-ups? Any receommendations on "safe" painkillers?

Most ALL your rx pain pills will cause more C if taken for a pro-longed period! I prefer Vicodian for extreme pain and Ultracet, which is tylenol based for less severe pain.

Michele,
Do you find that Vicodin doesn't bother you at all?

I find that all of the painkillers with codeine or other narcotics generally cause C...the only other option is to consider an NSAID (Naproxen, Torodol) but they can be really hard on the GI tract as well. I personally stick with the NSAIDS and just take them with LOTS of food...because I find that's better than the severe C I get from the narcotics.

Isn't this an anti-depressant of sorts? I thought it was but maybe I'm confusing it with something else?

If I only take it for a day or two, I'm fine! If I continue taking it for more than that, things slow down, way down! Since I already take miralax, I just add in an extra dose if that happens!

Does anyone else feel as though these work best to avoid C?

I think these are more likely to cause D more than anything else. You just really need to be careful that you take them with food...and there have been recent warnings about Naproxen (brand name Aleve) causing heart problems in large doses. Just something to think about ![](/messageboards/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

unfortunately its a case of weigh the odds.. I take celebrex in the winter for my arthritis- in the summer it lets up a lot and I just cope with it... since the side effects fo increased heart issues are all based on minimums of 18 months straight usage...
Codeine stops me up and knocks me out and nsaids even with a lot of food give me major cramps adn D.. basically it depends on whats wrong and how much I'm willing to cope.. the only thing I take anymore since my IBS-A got bad is tylenol.. and if that won't cut it- as I said I'm on celebrex for the winter as long as its not removed from the market... I actually find if I take it 5 days a week it keeps enough in my system now that I've built it up that I can be ok with skipping doses on my days off!
Good luck!

Codeine and other opiates are well known for causing constipation. Imodium, the anti-diarrheal is actually a synthetic opiate.
Tramadol, which Shelby mentioned, is a fairly new pain med in this country. I take it for fibromyalgia. Although constipation is listed as a potential side-effect, I haven't noticed any problems with it, whereas codeine definitely stops me up. Tramadol is the generic name, the brand name is Ultram. It also comes combined with Tylenol, which is called Ultracet. I prefer it separate so I can adjust the dosage as needed.
Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for the input on Celebrex. I am so worried they will take this off the market, without it, I cannot walk well at all. I have osteoarthritis in my lower back. When it warms up a little here, I am going to try and stretch my Celebrex to 5 days also. Nothing else helps with the pain except Tylenol, this is what I take when I feel like I have done too much and need a little something to make the C last until the next dose, it always helps, but does nothing on its own.

I have a terrible time with Excedrin which I assume is due to the high level of caffeine. It revs me up like a strong cup of coffee (actually it's kind of fun) and then within a few hours I have my IBS-C symptoms.

tell me about it- I have arthritis in my wrist and knees myself and celebrex allows me to move in MI winters... I am better in the summer, but still far from pain free...
