on why it would be helpful for IBS? Or is it just a fad diet for weight loss?

The South Beach diet is the new Atkins diet...with modifications. This diet differentiates between "good" carbs and "bad" carbs defined by the glycemic index. Similar to Atkins is a dramatic weight loss and decrease of "bad" cholesterol, lowered insulin levels, etc.
The problem with this diet (in addition to the fact that it is a "diet"), is that during the first two weeks you eat NO carbs (i.e., rice, pasta, bread, potatoes, etc.)...the foundation of our IBS way of life. You also don't eat any fruit. After the initial two weeks, you gradually add back foods (including fruit and high fiber carbs) until you lose the desired amount of weight, and then on to the maintenance phase. The problem for us "IBSers" is that we'd never make it to the third week because we'd be in such pain without soluble fiber!
There are TONS of websites re this diet...just do a search. I was going to link to one, but there are too many to choose from!

Hi Barb; thanks for the info, it definitely would not be for me as I practically live on breads, and it sounds perfectly horrid. Reminds me of a elimination diet I tried at the suggestion of my allergist.
