I've been having issues with low blood sugar lately, and from reading back posts, the best thing I can tell that I can do is to eat every 2-3 hours and to try to have protein with meals/snacks. The problem is I'm a vegetarian, and I can't have soy, so I'm kinda lost as to what else to eat. I have one PB&J a day, but if I eat more peanut butter than that, I have problems. Anyone have any ideas? The only thing I can think of is egg whites, but I don't eat at home, I have to take meals to campus with me, so I can't really do those on a regular basis. thanks

Are you Vegitarian or Vegan?
Add protein powder to soups, cereals and shakes....I think there is a rice one?
Beans...all kinds... you can make soups, veg chili etc.
Fine chopped nuts (just a few)...you could also add those to a smoothie or throw them into some of Heather's breads in her EFI book.
If you can do seafood in your diet salmon is great.
Here is a GREAT link with LOTS of info.... charts that list all the posible proteins!! web page

I also read somewhere that almonds -, which are listed as having the highest protein count of all the nuts - are a SF food. So that is good for the IBS diet.

I'm vegetarian too I'd recommend getting egg protein powder. That would probably have the least chance of you having any problems. It's pretty easy, just take a scoop in water and voila! I recommend the brand Health N Fit, it's really easy to stir(no clumps!) and isn't too bad tasting. Aside from that, can you tolerate beans? I used to not be able to, but now that I take an SFS everyday I can. How about a hummus? You can eat it on crackers or in a sandwhich. How about Quorn products? That's fake meat, but it's not made of soy, they're sooo yummy! Actually I think they have a tiny bit of dairy, but it's never bothered me.

No prob, a lot of people get confused on the fish issue, especially since there are some people who eat fish and claim to be veg! The best way to think of it is- Vegetarians don't eat anything poops.

LOL that reminds me of a few years ago when we went over to Shane's Cousin's house for Thanksgiving....well, he and his wife are both Veg but they made a Turkey for everyone else. And AFTER dinner...he made this comment...."If it has ever had an @$$ we don't eat it" It was just too funny!!

Vegan is more of a way of life, not a diet. Some vegetarians say they "eat a vegan diet", which is ok, but to be vegan you must rid your life of ALL possible animal products (beauty products with lanolin, leather, wool, silk, etc) and be an animal rights activist. That is why I stay right at my comfort zone of being a strict vegetarian (a vegetarian that 'eats the vegan diet' but still uses some animal products). This way I can pick out which animal products I find it ok and moral to use, and which I don't. Lots of people get confused on this issue, I did too, but actual vegans tend to get upset when people call vegetarians vegans. hope this helped alittle!

Why is it that you can't have soy? Are you allergic or find it hard to tolerate? On a veggie website I read that tempeh (fermented whole soybeans) is better for IBS, since somehow the fermentation process causes less gas. So that would be true for miso soup, too, I beleive. I also eat Hummus, like was suggested to you. How are you with minestrone? If I eat a roll before a bowl of minestrone I am ok (kidney beans). maybe you could make scrambled eggwhites at home and take them with you on a sandwich? Lentils I can eat after mushing them up, but not if I am feeling a little funny. heather has some kind of white bean dip recipe in her Eating for IBS cookbook. Maybe you can still eat the PB&J for lunch, and cook a god protein filled dinner for yourself? You are at a major disadvantage not being able to have soy, I eat the stuff constantly, from tofu to milk to yogurt! Good luck

Oh, I live on these little instant soup cups: there's one that's lentils and couscous. So long as you can get hot water, you can make yourself a very high protein meal!
