I had my baby, Jacob, on July 28! I'm so happy to have him in my life. Now that I'm not pregnant anymore, alot of the IBS symptoms have come back. I hardly had any symptoms when I was pregnant. Occassionally I would get constipated(but who doesn't when they're pg!) My main IBS symptoms are diarrhea, cramping, and bloating, which have all come back now. Do you think there's a link between hormones and IBS?

I also used to get canker sores before I was pg, but didn't get any when I was pg. As soon as I had the baby, in the hospital in fact, I got one! Does anyone else suffer from IBS AND canker sores?

I always had some stomach problems before I was pregnant but I was never diagnosed with IBS because they were never super bad. I had my son on Jan. 8 and during my pregnancy I could eat anything I wanted just about. After I stopped nursing I started to not feel good and my stomach went mostly to IBS-C with ocassionally a bit of D. Last month I was diagnosed and since changing my way of eating I have been better. My GI doctor told me that hormones during preganancy act as a muscle relaxer and that is why the colon doesn't spasm as bad. So my attacks weren't as bad. It was great being able to eat what I wanted but I also don't want to be pregnant all the time.

How did you get diagnosed? I've never actually been diagnosed either, my dr's just assume it's IBS from my symptoms I guess. Should I go to a specialist to get diagnosed and treated? Or just a regular doctor?

that makes sense about the hormones. But I'm like you it was nice being pregnant and not having symptoms, but we can't be constantly pregnant!

...ESPECIALLY as you are getting sores as well, which MIGHT be a sign of an IBD. A full blood-workup and colonoscopy are pretty essential before IBS can be diagnosed.

I've had IBS-C all my life & have gotten canker sores as long as I can remember. I don't know if there's a correlation. Never thought of that. I actually haven't had as many lately, but got one shortly after starting to drink lots of peppermint tea. I think that diet can cause canker sores.

Do you get migraines, too? I've read somewhere that a lot of IBS sufferers also get migraines. I started getting them when I was about 12 years old.

Hope you get to feeling better! A lot of women on this site swear by Heather's diet. I just started it a week ago, and already the bloating and horrible gas has stopped.

July 28 is MY BIRTHDAY! Congrats on your baby, especially on having him on such a cool day.
Canker sores are the absolute worst. I just had one that lasted more than 10 days, and was huge, on the inside of my bottom lip. It hurt SO much. I found I really like the Orajel medicated swabs. They do a good job. My friend also sufferes from canker sores, and her dad, a dentist, prescribed her liquid lidocaine. Obviously I don't know if you are breastfeeding, and if these things are okay if you are, so ask your doc. But, while you have a sore, avoid sugary sweets, and anything citrus, as they can aggravate the sore. The chemicals in pineapple are supposed to do something to help prevent the formation of sores, so if you can have a tiny glass each day, that might help. While you have the sore, rinsing with salt water is very helpful. If you can stand the pain, rinsing with Listerine is supposed to be very good for it.
Feel better soon!

My guess is that canker sores are just really common, tons of people suffer from them, so there is probably not a correlation.
But, my GI doc did explain to me a connection between IBS, Migraines, and Asthma. He said all three are the results of functional disorders, meaning there is no organic, physical problem with the body system concerned. With IBS, you have a normal digestive system that doesn't function normally. Same with your lungs, in asthma, and same with your blood vessles in migraines. For some reason your brain is sending signals to these systems, telling them to overreact to everything. He was not surprised to hear that I have Asthma and IBS-D (Though I think it's more A now). Thankfully I don't get migraines very often -- I've had maybe 3 in my life -- but several peope on the boards do. Just an interesting medical theory, I thought.

Wow, I'd never thought of a correlation between my asthma and my IBS. I have migraines as well. Interesting theory indeed.

Oh, and I get canker sores too. I've found listerine helps. What also has helped prevent them is to switch toothpaste to one that doesn't have SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), which is a detergent. Arm and Hammer Baking Soda toothpaste doesn't have sls, and since I switched toothpaste, I haven't gotten any canker sores.

I was diagnosed after having a colonoscopy done. I was on Librax and then Zelnorm neither helped me. So i had the test done and no major problems were detected so he said I had IBS-C. As for the canker sores I get them ocassinally exspecially if I eat a lot of citrus or tomatoes. Also stress is a big factor. I just got rid of one last week. Good luck. And by the way congrats on the baby and isn't motherhood great!

I used to get migraines. I also I get canker soers. I started taking Probotics Acidophilus and I haven't gotten them since. The Probotic Acidophilus, gets rid of the bad bateria in your good and keeps the good flurishing. Acacica has the same effect on your gut, I believe.

Acidophilus can help with a lot of things, even stomach problems. You can search it on the web. It does wonders!
