Hi there,
I have been diagnosed with IBS in a round about way. Saw my regular doctor gave him my systems, he gave me some pills, they helped BUT they made the blood pressure go higher (already high). I stopped the pills, found this site and went to a gastrointernest (sp) he did a colonoscopy and talked for along time. From this we determined that I do have it, he wants to to add fiber. When I told him about this site and what I found to be helpful, he didn't disagree and said as long as it works keep doing it. Sorry this is so long, but you need some background to know I have not just started all of this by myself. This weekend I was with family members, one who is into holistic medicine and she indicated that I need to get off all bread etc. because of the gluten. My question finally is, how do you know you have a gluten intolerance? I eat bread, potatoes, rice and they seem to help. Again I need to watch the portion sizes, fat content etc. Could use some input. I feel comfortable talking with all of you and trust what has been said. Over all I feel better, this has been a very stressful fall and I know that adds alot to the illness. Appreciate your input. Sorry I rambled on.
Thanks to you all.

hey there if you feel that bread is helping you, then stick to it!! I found that white bread was too contipating for me and wholewheat too sloppy inducing, so I cut wheat out..but that is AFTER i used it for a long time. you shouldn't cut it out unless your symptoms are not easing and you have a feeling it might be bread. enjoy it. bread is amazing..I miss it! wishing you only good health...

There is a blood test your doc can order to test for gluten intolerance (just had one done myself), and I think a seperate test they can do for Celiacs. You might do a search of recent posts for more info, or maybe someone who knows more than I do will respond.
Good luck to you!

...try to keep it to what you can hold in your cupped hands (use your imagination! ).
Fat content is 25-30% max per MEAL, but I never bother working it out properly - just use a little oil in your cooking and maybe some low-fat mayo or a little soya marg on potatoes, etc.

Thank you for the information. I trust this site much more than some of the doctors. Will check with mine to see about that. I am thrilled that I found all of you, this has been a life saver. If I follow the diet, exercise ?? and try to keep the stress level down ( I have accomplished 1 out of 3) I do wonderful. Best to all and have a good day.

How did your gluten intolerance tests come back? What is your diet going to be now? I may or may not have celiac dis as 2 of my tests were pos, but the one most specific for celiac came back neg as did the biopsy, but I don't know if I should avoid gluten because 2 of them were positive. What is your situation.

My test came back negative, so I will continue with Heather's diet - not gluten free. I don't really know much about g/f diet; it was my doc who suggested the test. So I don't know what to suggest about whether you should avoid it. What did your doc say about the two positives? As I said previously, I believe that there are two seperate tests, one for gluten intolerance, and one for Celiacs. Could you have an intolerance and not Celiacs? I think your doc should have explained it better to you, as far as what you should do, or have sent you to someone who could explain.
I'm sorry I can't be more help for you, but I'm completely stumped
