A study led by a Canadian doc has uncovered apreviously unrecognized cause of IBS. Researchers at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A. have discovered an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestines of of 157 ( 78%) of 202 people with IBS. After standard antibotic treatment for 7 to 10 days 47 of them returned for followup tests. In more than half of these patients ( 25) this bacterial overgrowth was successfully eradicated. 12 of the people reported they had no more IBS symtoms. Many of those who were treated but still had bacteria at least reported an improvement in their symtoms.

Hi - This study actually goes back a while, and the results are in dispute because of the study format. For info about IBS and a possible bacterial connection, check here web page
