Well, I'm getting pretty frustrated. I have had IBS a long time about 19 years now. I am in a really bad cycle right now. I am usually IBS C which I take miralax to combat the C. The last 6 weeks, I have really been struggling with severe pain and bloating.

I have been on the diet for over 1.5 years and take Acacia. I take Zoloft which my dr just upped the dose on this morning. Since its been real bad lately, I have been taking Donnatal, Vicodin and Xanax. I do know the Vicodin causes more C, if I feel like I'm getting backed up, I take an extra dose of miralax so the pain isn't from being C. I take Gas-x and peppermint capsules. I drink a ton of water. I haven't exercised nearly enough lately because it hurts too much. The dr this morning told me to force myself to start working out again. I know the exercise will help but its just so hard when you hurt so much.

I have had these cycles before but they don't usually last this long. The dr this morning said it was because of the stress of the summer (2 miscarriages) and the fact that I want to be pregnant now and I'm having a hard time concieving again. She thinks its mostly the stress thats not letting this cycle break. I tend to agree but don't know what else to do??!!

Does anyone have any words of wisdom or perhaps ideas on what I can try to break this darned cycle??

Michele:

I am IBS-D nowadays, but for the first 30 years of my life I was IBS-C so I understand your situation. I am not completely symptom free, but I have been pain-free and bloating-free for about 18 months now through a careful diet and lifestyle. I control my IBS without taking any IBS medication (which doesn't work anyway).

If you want to e-mail me (my e-mail address is on my profile), I'll see if I can help you break the cycle.

But you have to be truly willing to make changes. I find many people on this message board are looking for quick fixes. Sadly, there are no quick fixes for IBS.

I've been living with IBS for 46 years and I have found an approach that works (based on Heather's diet), but it includes doing things like eating organic, not eating prepared foods, staying away from food with additives/chemicals, etc. If you can handle this type of natural approach, then please contact me and I will be most happy to set you on the road to feeling better!

Hi Michele!

I too have been suffering lately with the bloatedness and pain. However, the last week and a half it's been accompanied by C. I figured the only way to get around it was to let my colon "settle down", so I ended up following "What to Eat When You Can't Eat Anything" yesterday, and plan on it today as well. I've got to tell you, today's much much better. Still a tiny bit of bloating going on, and still some C, but not nearly as bad as it was. It's maybe worth a try for you... just a thought. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Michele, my sympathies, sweetie! Yes, it does sound like it's stress-related like your doctor said. So you need to attack it through the mind-gut connection. This is a problem of the autonomic nervous system freaking out! Call your local Y and see if they have a meditation class. Most gyms do now. Or sign up for a month of massages twice a week. If you have the IBS hypnosis tapes, try that.

Feel better, hon!

Michele - I am so sorry you are going through this, but I think your doctor might be right. Have you tried the hypnosis tapes for IBS? I think you might find them very comforting at this time.

Good luck and BIG HUGS to you.

I did do the hypno tapes and still listen to them every night to help me relax. I guess I just need to learn to relax! I'm really going to force myself to get back into working out, hopefully that will help!
