Hi Judy,
Reincorporating healthy but "difficult" foods back into the diet is probably the most difficult part of the IBS diet... Some tips though:
- make sure that all IF (insoluble fiber) foods - vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts etc. (see Heather's page on this) - are chopped, mashed, pureed, peeled, etc. etc. etc. At first, I always like to "hide" the IF in a good SF base like rice or pasta, i.e. a blended veggie sauce with lots of rice or a soup with lots of bread. Smoothies are another good option if you have them after a slice of bread (i.e. soy or rice milk with lots of SF fruits like bananas and an SFS mixed in). Another good option is homemade breads such as Heather's Zucchini bread.
- for that matter, is he taking an SFS?
- don't underestimate the amount of SF needed with fats, IF and other difficult foods - at first. You should be going from the all SF diet (aka the Breaking the Cycle Diet, or BTC) to a little bit of IF... i.e. meals would be 100% SF, then, say, 85% SF for a few days, then 70% etc.... based on his own tolerances.
- he did do the BTC diet right?
- I know that for me, exercise has been key to keeping my gut stable. Drinking lots of water too. Not eating too much at any meal, eating every 2-3 hrs etc...
- Does he lean towards C or D?
Hope that helps a bit
