I've been going steadily downhill over the last 3 weeks and I'm getting very frustrated. I spent my morning in the bathroom in the throes of an attack, so I obviously am missing work today....for the 4th day since school started. I was fine during the summer....
All I have to say is....#^@&%(*^@#%^&$*#&%(&*(*^$(@#%&@$^*#&%(%&(*^)^$!!!!!!!!!!!
ok...I feel better now....just had to vent!

I take it you're a teacher? It's probably beginning school jitters. Try imodium, drinking peppermint tea all day long (lug it in a thermos). I was a teacher. Been there. Try to relax and take time for yourself. I hope you feel better soon. Alicia.

Yep! I'm a teacher! lol A very busy, overwhelmed, stressed out teacher...and it's only the 4th week of school! eeeek!!! I only take the immodium when I absolutely have to because in the end, it just causes another attack because I get C, then the D tries to fight it, and....well....you get the idea!
I have definitely decided on a career change. I've taught for 19 years and I'm going to get a master's degree in counseling. I've decided to start this summer. I loved teaching, but I need a change now. With a counseling degree, I can remain in the school environment, but would also be able to go into private practice if I want later on down the road.

Good idea. I can see myself as a counsellor, too. I also have a spec. ed specialist and have taught special ed before and found it very refreshing. After chaos in a class of 30 I found it very nice to sit and work with a small group of kids in a quiet environment. Plus, there were EAs in the room so I could go to the bathroom anytime I wanted.

Oh, meep. I know at my former school it was considered bad if you actually took a day off. It was much better being the martyr and going to work sick. How STUPID!!!!!! Take the time you need. When you die, there will be no rewards for how many days you went into work sick. Have you considered talking to your Doc? Many have had good success on a low dose anti depressant for IBS. That might be an option - and it might even help with your stress level. What do you think?

I am taking 50 mg of Amitriptaline nightly. I have been feeling much better! I am eating well and I have began to gain some of the weight back that I lost over the summer. I think the meds have been a huge help. (not to mention the diet) I too am a teacher. I was nervous that my stomach would act up while teaching...but so far so good. I am being cautious of what I eat during the week so not to have a bad tummy. (chicken, rice, grilled veggies, oven fries, rice noodles, veggie burgers, soy ice cream bars, peppermint tea 3x/day, graham crackers, applesauce, pretzels, and oatmeal for breakfast daily).

I've been on wellbutrin and zoloft for years. The zoloft has been off and on. But I was reading something recently that zoloft is not the best for IBS D...that it might aggravate the symptoms. So I have decreased my dosage of it to 25mg/day. I hope to just go off of it. Someone was mentioning Lexapro was good for anxiety/IBS D. It might be something I need to check out.

Oh Meep, I feel your pain!! I'm a teacher, too. This was our first week of school and I had an IBS attack for no obvious reason on Thursday night. I'm not even that stressed out! I was stuck in the bathroom for over 2 hours, and was soooo close to calling in sick Friday morning, but I just didn't feel right missing a day the very first week of school. I know, %^&* happens, but the first week?! So I know exactly where you're coming from. I ended up feeling okay on Friday as long as I ate only toast and dry Honeycombs. I'm glad to hear you ended up staying home, though. If I'd had my attack in the a.m. I wouldn't have had any choice, either. We have to do what we have to do for our bodies, as horribly frustrating as it is. Sigh.
I also don't blame you for wanting to change careers. Teaching is just about the most unconducive (is that a word?) career for IBSers I can think of. We can't just run to the bathroom like most people and leave our students twiddling their thumbs in the classroom! Thankfully, I'm a resource room teacher, so I only have a handful of kids at a time. The one time I had an IBS attack at school I was able to just send them down to the other resource room. Still, it's a lot of stress sometimes knowing we can't just leave at will. Counseling sounds like a good alternative. I hope it works out for you!

See if you can try Paxil.....paroxitine (generic). I too tried zoloft, but if exasperated the D. I have been on paroxitine for several years now and have good results There was a website that indicated that paroxitine was helpful in IBS..... I think I posted it. If you do a search I think it will show up.

I started teaching PreK 4 this year. Every day about 10:00 we sit down for snack and of course I don't eat what they eat. So I explained to them on the first day of school that I was on a diet. They are very cute about it, and they know not to sit at the place where I set my bowl of dry cereal... but recently ... at a pool party, where one of my students were present he anounced very proudly to the crowd that I was on a diet. It was kind of embarressing.

Stress does seem to be a cramp trigger for me too. The first week of school I think I only went to the bathroom twice. And my stomach felt like one big knot. Chany

hey. I know how you feel. I changed majors with one semester left in elementary k-8. When I started the major I wasnt experiencing symptoms of IBS. Then once I got iBS it seemed like teaching was the worst thing I could do. I changed to library science and liked it much better. Right now my IBS is soo bad I cant even do that. I HAVE to get it under control. I also have extreme anxiety about it. I tried drinking the peppermint tea to help with attacks but it gave me such heartburn.. any other kind of soothing tea that could help minus the heartburn.. does chamomile work?
WelL i hope you feel better soon! Cindy
